Poultry rations are composed mainly of conventional cereal grains and proteins. Using non-conventional agro-industrial by-products may reduce the cost of production and thereby improve productivity. A study was conducted to evaluate the effect of dietary brewery spent grain inclusion on egg laying performance, quality parameters of bovans brown and profitability of the rations. A total of 200 pullets with similar body weight and age were randomly distributed to five treatments with four replications. The treatments were brewery spent grain (BSG) inclusion of 0, 10, 20, 30 and 40% levels for T1, T2, T3, T4 and T5, respectively. The CP and ME contents of treatment rations were 16.54-17.04% and 2871-2903 kcal/kg DM, respectively. Inclusion of the BSG in the layers ration did not affect dry matter intake, feed conversion efficiency and hen-day egg production (58.79, 57, 56.11, 55.11 and 54.13% (SEM=0.92)). Likewise, the inclusion of the BSG in the diets did not affect (albumen, yolk, shell) quality. However, feed cost decreased with the increasing level of the BSG in the rations because of its lower purchasing price. To conclude, a 40% inclusion of BSG in the diet of layers does not affect the production and the quality of the eggs and it can be economically profitable.
Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) refers to a group of parasitic infections caused by the protozoan parasite Leishmania spp. Lack of knowledge and awareness regarding this disease creates a burden for patients with CL to deal with self-stigma. The aim of this ethnographic study is to provide an analysis of self-stigma experienced by patients with CL through an in-depth understanding of the self-stigma experienced by patients with cutaneous leishmaniasis. A qualitative data analysis approach was used for this study. Semi-structured interviews and participant observation were conducted with 33 individuals with CL, and data were analyzed using a thematic analysis method. Interviews revealed that individuals with CL experience severe self-stigma. The participants spoke of their struggle to live with physical appearances that differed from societal norms. Furthermore, they also highlighted that people with CL are often viewed as unclean and contagious, which further adds to their self-stigma. Fear of social exclusion often forced individuals with CL to isolate themselves, leading to a detrimental impact on their mental health and quality of life. This study provides valuable insights into the experiences of patients with CL who are subjected to self-stigma. The findings suggest that the lack of knowledge and the considerable misconceptions surrounding CL create barriers for patients to deal with the condition and the self-stigma attached to it. To address this issue, there is a need for dedicated public health campaigns and health education that increase awareness about CL and provide appropriate support and care for those affected.
Ethiopia, the emerging economies of Africa has abundant cow milk potential but its milk harvest is negligible. In order to enhance milk yield, an improved livestock feeding practice such as stall feeding (SF) is introduced and expanded in the region. In this paper, we aim to evaluate the impact of stall feeding on rural farmers’ milk production and calf death using IV 2SLS model. The paper used a primary data collected from 251 randomly selected smallholder households consisting 115 adopters and 136 non-adopters. Accordingly, the average SF adopter’s milk production per day per cow is 1.3 litters larger as compared to the non-users. Likewise, Stall feeding significantly reduces the probability of death for the newly born calves by about 68%.
The research dealt with the relationships between temperature variability and price of food stuffs in Tigrai using 84 months collected time series data thereby applied a Univariate econometric tool and finite Distributed Lag Model in defining the variables and outcome of the study. As a result, the econometric regression analysis witnessed that a 1oC temperature rise contributed the average price of food stuffs such as barley price rose up by 80 percent, maize 186 percent, sorghum close to 275 percent, wheat 60 percent, and 170 percent in white Teff over the years, ceteris paribus.
