This study is about the importance of the Teluk Anson wharf which used to be the transit center of the merchant's vessel in 1882 until 1941. It also was known as a wharf in the British colonial administration since the opening in 1882. The development and construction of Teluk Anson port are very important as a wharf which handles the import and export transactions in the state of Perak, especially as the collection center of tin ore and agricultural product for the districts of Lower Perak and other nearby places. The study is carried out by using the qualitative method which focusing the analysis on the primary sources such as Marine Annual Report, Federated Malays States Annual Report, Perak Annual Report, District Report and Perak Secretariat File which obtained from The National Archive of Malaysia. The study is focusing on the Teluk Anson wharf located in the district of Lower Perak. The findings show that the port of Teluk Anson had a significant role in trading activity, export, and import of merchandise, especially after commercial agricultural revolutions. The wharf of Teluk Anson became the focus of the merchant vessels from the Malay States, Southeast Asia, Europe, and the United States. In conclusion, the infrastructural facilities which existed in the Teluk Anson wharf towns made this wharf as the main attraction in the Federated Malay States at the early of its opening until the World War-II. The implication of this study shows that the Teluk Anson wharf used to be the important wharf in the state of Perak during the British colonial era.
Teluk Anson has one of the most important wharves in the Federated Malay States. Teluk Anson wharf also became the attraction to the ships sailing from other states in Malaya, South East Asia, Europe, and America. Its role as the main wharf became so significant to the extent it became one of the main and important wharves in the Federated Malay States besides Port Weld and Port Swettenham, which consequently influenced the development in Lower Perak. This study totally used the qualitative method which emphasized the analysis of documents and manuscripts. Critical observation and analysis of records or documents used were very important to obtain accurate data. The result shows that the existence of the wharf had caused the development of the railway system, commercial agriculture, and improvement of the irrigation system. Thus, it stimulated development in Lower Perak district into a distinguishable town in Perak.
The Public Work Department had a very important role in the urbanization process in the state of Perak. It was founded in 1872 and the new organization was introduced. The role and involvement of British officers were becoming wider to meet the need in administrative and professional fields such as engineering and architecture. The research was carried out by using qualitative methods of collecting the data and information on the role of the Public Work Department in the networking system development in the state of Perak. The approaches of document analysis, such as the Federated Malay States Government Gazette, Federated Malay States Annual Report of Railways and Perak Secretariat, which obtained from the National Archived of Malaysia has been emphasized in collecting the data. The writing and research on Perak development also been referred to as strengthening the finding of the study. The finding shows that there were various plans and development, implementation was carried out after the establishment of the Public Work Department in Perak. The plan and implementation involve the matters relating to the construction, infrastructure facilities of railways connection and roads. Among them was the construction of the first railway link which connects Taiping and Port Weld. The construction of the railway network was increasing throughout the state until the 1930’s. Therefore, the Public Works Department has played a major role in ensuring that the implementation of the communication system is well structured and successful.
