Verb complementation in New Englishes perspective has attracted extensive scholarly attention (Nihalani et al., 2004). A valuable deviation due to emergence of locally characteristic linguistic patterns in Pakistani English can be captured in the domain of verb complementation called New Ditransitives(NDTs) (Bernaisch & Koch, 2015), on a broad syntactic level, NDTs are verbs used in double-object construction in new Englishes but not in standard British English. This paper is an attempt to find out NDTs in Pakistani English as compared to British English by using comparable corpora and as well as Predication phrase analysis of Larson (1988) compatible with Chomskys ideas about argumentsƒƒƒ interpretations in the area of vp is used for syntactic analysis. The theoretical significance shows that the main difference in producing NDTs is due to different parameters and system of lexicon.
The focus of this study is to highlight the syntax of the negation marker in Urdu serial verbs. There are two types of serial verb constructions (SVCs) in Urdu. In SVC 1, negation marker either precedes both verbs or it comes in between SVC, whereas in SVC 2 single negation marker either comes in between SVC or double negation precedes both verbs in sequence. The insertion of single negation marker in SVC does not affect the agreement phenomenon in Urdu and it merely adds supplementary negation reading in the sentence. However, the double negation affects the agreement i.e. the basic construction of SVC-1 where the first verb remains frozen and the last verb shows agreement in terms of number, person, and gender but when double negation comes in SVC- 1 it converts the construction into SVC-2 where both verbs show agreement, and negation marker shows agreement in terms of aspect on first verb. Under the Minimalist Program, both negation markers originate under TP which is similar to Chomsky’s representation of negation in clause. First negation marker in double negation constituent takes the frozen verb as its compliment and becomes cause of its inflection, whereas the second negation marker is the specifier of the second verb which is similar to Bukhari’s analysis
Feminism is about studying gender differences and regarding complementing the role of sexes in society. Unfortunately, Pakistan can be counted among the states that show less tolerance towards Feminism and has been regarded as a western concept that accounts for being unnecessary for an Islamic state. Post 911 Muslims became the center stage of world politics while Muslim women with false notions were started to seen as the oppressed and victimized. In portraying the image of women, world media has played an important role. With the changing media discourse, the perceptions regarding womens roles also changed. This research article would highlight the effect of media on the building of power structures of gender in Pakistan.
