The results of a first systematic study of spatial distribution of different elements in surface soil over of the Kavadarci region, Republic of Macedonia, known for its nickel industrial activity are reported. The investigated region (360 km 2 ) is covered by a sampling grid of 2 9 2 km 2 ; whereas the sampling grid of 1 9 1 km 2 was applied in the urban zone and around the ferronickel smelter plant (117 km 2 ). In total 344 soil samples from 172 locations were collected. At each sampling point soil samples were collected at two depths, topsoil (0-5 cm) and bottom soil (20-30 cm). Inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was applied for the determination of 36 elements (Ag,
Since the late 1970s, it has been increasingly recognized that the petrology and geochemistry of ophiolites predominantly resemble those of lithological units from intra-oceanic subduction zones, ranging from nascentand fore-to intra-or back-arcs, ruling out analogy with modern oceanic ridge lithosphere. This conclusion is
The potassic (K) to ultrapotassic (UK) volcanic rocks cropping out in the Vardar Zone of Macedonia and southern Serbia span in age from Late Miocene (6.57 Ма)
The northern part of the Pelagonian Zone experienced a polyphase deformation and metamorphism. Four groups of K/Ar biotite and white mica ages document (I) Hercynian emplacement of plutonic rocks, (II) Eohellenic nappe stacking associated with penetrative deformation / recrystallisation, (III) a Paleocene event in the Mesocoic cover rocks in Greece and (IV) a westward movement of West Pelagonian nappes during Eocene to Oligocene time. First zircon/apatite fission track ages clustering around 70 Ma and 45 to 30 Ma.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
