Activated sludges taken from full-scale membrane separation processes, building wastewater reuse system (400m3/d), and two nightsoil treatment plants (50m3/d) as well as laboratory scale membrane separation bioreactor (0.062m3/d) were analyzed to characterize membrane separation activated sludge processes (MSAS). They were also compared with conventional activated sludges(CAS) taken from municipal wastewater treatment plants. Specific nitrification activity in MSAS processes averaged at 2.28gNH4-N/kgMLSS.h were higher than that in CAS processes averaged at 0.96gNH4-N/kgMLSS.h. The denitrification activity in both processes were in the range of 0.62-3.2gNO3-N/kgMLSS.h without organic addition and in the range of 4.25-6.4gNO3-N/kgMLSS.h with organic addition. The organic removal activity in nightsoil treatment process averaged at 123gCOD/kgMLSS.h which was significantly higher than others. Floc size distributions were measured by particle sedimentation technique and image analysis technique. Flocs in MSAS processes changed their sizes with MLSS concentration changes and were concentrated at small sizes at low MLSS concentration, mostly less than 60 μm. On the contrary, floc sizes in CAS processes have not much changed with MLSS concentration changes and they were distributed in large range. In addition, the effects of floc size on specific nitrification rate, denitrification rate with and without organic carbon addition were investigated. Specific nitrification rate was decreased as floc size increased. However, little effect of floc size on denitrification activity was observed.
Water hammer is an undesired hydraulic shock phenomenon in water supply pipe systems. It is very important to simulate water hammer for preventing the hazard of over pressure. In order to predict the transient pressure caused by a valve closing in a gravitational pipe with continuous air entrainment, a numerical model based on the Lax-Wendroff format is established, and the matched boundary model is provided. Compared with the traditional methods, this study provides another access by considering the influence of the pipe flow velocity on the wave propagation to simulate transient processes. A corresponding experiment is conducted to optimize the numerical model. Based on the experimental result, an additional friction function is proposed to evaluate the influence of the air content on the attenuation. The result shows that the energy dissipation of the shock waves may be underestimated in air-water mixture flow using the common steady friction. By introducing the additional friction function, the improved model can more accurately simulate the attenuation of the water hammer in the gravitational pipe with continuous air entrainment. As there are plenty of practical water supply systems running with air content, the improved Lax-Wendroff Method (LWM) is valued in accurately predicting water hammer processes especially in those conditions.
Abstract:A surge tank is a common pressure control device in long pressurized pipelines. The performance is greatly influenced by the location, cross area, and the characteristics of the connector. In order to improve the property of the surge tank, the effect of the connector is numerically analyzed by the method of characteristics (MOC). A hysteretic effect can occur when the discharge capacity is limited. Therefore, the performance of the surge tank can be improved if the discharge capacity of the connector is appropriately controlled according to the different conditions. For the adjustability of the connector's discharge capacity, a kind of intelligent self-controlled surge tank (IST) is proposed. In addition, through simulations and analysis, IST is proved to have advantages in pressure control and applicability compared to normal surge tanks.
Background and Aim. Antineoplastic drug-induced cardiotoxicity (ADIC) becomes the second leading cause of death for tumor survivors after tumor recurrence and metastasis, and there may be great room for development in the future of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). However, the theory of anticardiotoxicity of TCM has not yet formed a system. This study aimed to explore the material basis and the rule of TCM against ADIC based on network pharmacology and data mining. Methods. The targets of antineoplastic drugs with cardiotoxicity were obtained from the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) database, China national knowledge infrastructure (CNKI) database, and Swiss Target Prediction platform. Then, the cardiotoxicity-related targets were derived from the Gene Cards, Disgenet, OMIM, and DrugBank databases, as well as the drug of current clinical guidelines. The targets both in these two sets were regarded as potential targets to alleviate ADIC. Then, candidate compounds and herbs were matched via Traditional Chinese Medicine Systems Pharmacology (TCMSP) platform. Cytoscape3.7.1 was used to set up the target-compound-herb network. Molecular docking between core targets and compounds was performed with AutodockVina1.1.2. The rules of herbs were summarized by analyzing their property, flavor, and channel tropism. Results. Twenty-one potential targets, 332 candidate compounds, and 400 kinds of herbs were obtained. Five core targets including potassium voltage-gated channel subfamily H member 2 (KCNH2), cyclin-dependent kinase 1 (CDK1), matrix metalloproteinase 2 (MMP2), mitogen-activated protein kinase1 (MAPK1), and tumor protein p53 (TP53) and 29 core compounds (beta-sitosterol, quercetin, kaempferol, etc.) were collected. Five core herbs (Yanhusuo, Gouteng, Huangbai, Lianqiao, and Gancao) were identified. Also, the TCM against ADIC were mainly bitter and acrid in taste, warm in property, and distributed to the liver and lung meridians. Conclusion. TCM against ADIC has great potential. Our study provides a new method and ideas for clinical applications of integrated Chinese and western medicine in treating ADIC.
