Carpal tunnel, first DC, and RC injections had an accuracy of greater than 90%. Thumb CMC injections have a lower accuracy (63%) and one can improve accuracy with U/S. The accuracy of U/S-guided injections is dependent on the user and their experience.
Development of a number of diseases like cardiovascular diseases and cancer has been related with abnormalities of certain trace elements in some tissues. The purpose of this study was to investigate the levels of trace elements in breast cancer patients in comparison with healthy controls. Particle induced X-ray emission (PIXE) technique was employed to measure the hair trace element concentrations in 30 cancer patients and 30 healthy controls. A 2.2 MeV proton beam was employed to excite the biological samples. The concentrations of Fe and Cu (p < 0.05) in the hair of cancer patients were found to be higher compared to those of healthy controls, while the concentration of Zn (p < 0.05) was found to be lower. No significant difference was observed for sulfur concentration between the two groups. Also, no meaningful difference was observed in the concentrations of K, Ca, Ti as well as ratios of Cu/Zn and Cu/Fe in the hair of the two groups (p < 0.05). These abnormalities could potentially be used as a means of breast cancer screening in women.
Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy CIPN is the most common neurological side effect of chemotherapy and is characterized by damage to the nervous system that is a direct result of the medications associated with chemotherapy. Often, this damage to the central nervous system pain pathways results in neuropathic pain described as burning, paroxysmal, stabbing, or elective shock-like and accompanied by pins-andneedles sensations and itching. The presence and severity of neuropathic pain is often shown to be associated with impairments in walking, general activities, sleep, work, mood, enjoyment of life, and relationships with others. Treatment of neuropathic pain due to CIPN often requires a multidisciplinary approach due to the broad variety of symptoms and their negative impact on quality of life. To provide treatment strategies that are effective for patients, they should include a combination of pharmacological agents and exercise rehabilitation. Exercise rehabilitation programs should be designed in order to help patients familiarize themselves to changes in physical functioning. The goals of the program should target three main areas maximize functional capacities, prolong or maintain independent function, and improve quality of life.
surgery occurred a mean of 4.2±2.5 years ago. Based on the HADS, 31% and 16% of patients had clinically meaningful anxiety and depression, respectively. Depression was significantly associated with poorer totaI IBDQ scores (p<0.0001) and higher BIQ scores (p<0.0001). Females are 2.15 times more likely to have anxiety than males (OR 2.15, 95% CI 1.19-3.88). Other factors associated with anxiety include loss of work productivity (OR 1.39, 95% CI 1.18-1.64) and poorer body image (OR 1.12, 95% CI 1.04-1.20). CONCLUSIONS: The findings from this multi-national study provide insight on important factors to inform patientphysician communications both prior to and post-colectomy.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
