Stress is a multidimensional and multifaceted phenomenon that reflects and conditions individual and organizational quality of life. However, given specific work contexts in which there are disproportionate demands, lack or reduced support from the organizational structure, dull treatment of employees, lack of recognition, and the existence of a conflictual environment, it leads to relatively high levels of organizational stress. In turn, burnout arises from the crisis in relationships with work. Its main manifestations are emotional and physical exhaustion, cynicism, and professional ineffectiveness, arising from feelings of exhaustion, energy depletion, increased apathy with work, reduced effectiveness, and negativism with the professional routine. In this follow-up, a bibliometric analysis between 1980 and 2022 was conducted to explore the most relevant authors, documents, and journals, the trends identified in the publications, and the collaborations between countries in the field of study.
This chapter aims to understand the organizational practices of disengagement of senior employees, focusing primarily on the final phase of the careers of this class of employees and their entry into retirement. It analyzed the challenges of adaptation to retirement, as well as the disengagement practices used by organizations, and characterized the individual career management of seniors. The methodology used was qualitative, using a semi-structured interview complemented by a socio-demographic survey for data collection. The results of the study point to the fact that the whole process of end-of-career and retirement has a significant impact on both individuals and organizations. The evidence shows that factors such as aging and the importance of health and family are some of the main concerns of individuals. At the same time, organizations focus mainly on career management, succession processes, and employee satisfaction at the end of their careers and, consequently, on acceptable entry into retirement.
The aging workforce is a growing reality, given demographic changes and socioeconomic trends. Therefore, it is crucial to understand, accept, and respect the issues of an aging workforce regarding health and safety in the workplace, especially when aiming to keep the individual longer in the labor market. It is also essential to consider the potential sensory disabilities of each individual so that they can overcome them and fully perform their functions in the workplace. From this perspective, the sensory capabilities of individuals must be assured through different means to guarantee that the organic and functional changes arising from aging are successfully overcome. In this follow-up, a bibliometric analysis between 2001 and 2022 was conducted to explore the most relevant authors, journals, countries, institutions, and publications in sensory aging and the workforce.
The authors of this chapter aim to present the links between an aging workforce, innovation, and creativity. They address each of these themes individually, and then analyze the interconnection between the central theme (i.e., the aging workforce with creativity and innovation), and in the last point, analyze the innovative work behavior as a conclusive way of using the knowledge and skills of the aging workforce as a competitive advantage for an organization. Thus, this chapter demonstrates that the aging workforce, contrary to popular belief, is one of the age segments of organizations that contributes most to the innovation process since there is a symbiotic process between older and younger workers, and this is also evident in the creative process since innovation and creativity are intrinsic processes.
