Purpose of the study: This research aimed at investigating the extent of anxiety experienced by TOEFL test-takers in the Indonesian context as EFL learners. Methodology: The participants of this study were 50 university students from various non-English majors. They were selected by using purposive sampling. The research design was descriptive quantitative method, in which a 10-question questionnaire was used as the research instrument. The questions were scored by using a five-point scale and the data were analyzed by using the three steps of data analysis. Main Findings: The result of the data analysis showed that more than 80%percent of students experienced moderate anxiety before and during the TOEFL test-taking while the rest (20%) suffered from mild anxiety. Applications of this study: The research findings can benefit TOEFL Preparation classes’ instructors, by which they can take the anxiety variable into account when teaching TOEFL so that the level of students’ anxiety before and during the test can be minimized. Novelty/Originality of this study: Relatively little research examined EFL students’ anxiety in the TOEFL test. Others are much devoted to the anxiety aspects within English classroom contexts such as in anxiety in reading, writing, and speaking skills, the relationship between anxiety and motivation, as well as intelligence dominance among non-low proficiency students. Therefore, this research is devoted to a high-stake test (TOEFL test), which has not been studied previously by any researchers.
Purpose of the study: The study aims are to investigate levels of language politeness and its violations in the political communication of Jokowi and Prabowo and to describe the types of politeness and its violations in political communication of Jokowi and Prabowo as Indonesian president candidates in 2019. Methodology: This research was used a qualitative approach with the descriptive method by paying attention to the Interactive Model theory to describe the object in analysis data through a pragmatic approach to identify the politeness principles and its violation following Leech’s (1983) theory. The subject of data on this research has conducted the utterances of Indonesian president candidates 2019 in the second debate session. Main Findings: The result of the study can be concluded that five principles of politeness seen in the utterances of the presidential candidate. They are tact, approbation, modesty, agreement, and sympathy maxim. Furthermore, in this research, Prabowo was more polite than Jokowi where he has produced utterances of approbation, agreement, and less violation of modesty, while Jokowi more violated the modesty maxim. Applications of this study: The study has an impact on political behavior. Other areas of study include social and political science and communication Novelty/Originality of this study: This research is the new way in the context of language politeness study where combined the language politeness principles with socio-political science especially political communication.
The aims of this study were to analyze the types, the patterns of lexical change with reference to social contact among the speakers of Pase dialect. The subjects of the study were personal documents written in Pase dialect as available in Language Department of Aceh. From the research, 505 lexicons were found, where 154 lexicons underwent loss. The percentage of lexical loss of noun was 75.32%, adjective 12.34%, and verb 12.34%. The number of lexical borrowings was 177 lexicons. The percentage of lexical borrowing of noun was 78.53%, adjective 15.25%, verb 5.09%, and adverb 1.13%. In phonological change, there were 155 lexicons. The percentage of phonological changes of noun was 89.68%, adjective 6.45%, verb 2.38%, and adverb 1.29%. In semantic change, there were 19 lexicons found, the percentages of which are: noun 68.42%, adjective 10.53%, and verb 21.05%. The patterns of lexical change with reference to social contact among the speakers of Pase dialect were potential loss in lexical loss, borrowings in the patterns of loan-words, loan-blend, loan-translation. The patterns of phonological change were lenition, fortition, vowel and syllable structure, syncope, apocope, and epenthesis. This study aims to classify the characteristics of Culture-Bound Syndrome in Acehnese speakers from the perspective of Socio-Psycholinguistics, particularly in Aceh Besar, Pidie, and Aceh Utara by comparing gender, age, and the education level of the patient. The researchers chose to use a case study approach to conduct data to be able to provide an overview of the characteristics of Culture-Bound Syndrome behaviour displayed. In analysing the data, the researcher refers to Spradley Theory who said that analytical technique with four advanced paths, namely (1) domain analysis; (2) taxonomy analysis; (3) componential analysis; and (4) cultural values analysis. After the research done, the researchers found that the characteristics of Culture-Bound Syndrome in Acehnese speakers are five characteristics, namely (1) Coprolalia, this research found that females more often use Coprolalia than males, more often in adult patients than in adolescents and elderly patients, and only appeared in patients with a low level of education; (2) Echolalia was found in adolescents, adults and the elderly, more often in female patients than in male, and more often used by lower education level than high level of education; (3) Auto Echolalia was only appears of females while in males and elder it is not found. Meanwhile, the most Auto Echolalia were found at adolescents than adults. If we look at the aspect of education level, the patients with a low education level more often than higher education level; (4) Auto Obedience was not found at category of females and adolescents; and (5) Religio was only appears in category of adult, elderly, males, and higher education levels. The last characteristic has never existed in the results of previous research studies, therefore, there is a need for a more in-depth study with a larger scope to examine this section.
The aims of this study are (1) to find out how reading instruction is prepared by the English teachers of Mathayum Islam Bachok Wittaya School, (2) to find out how the reading instruction is applied by the English teachers of Mathayum Islam Bachok Wittaya School, and (3) to find out how the English teachers Mathayum Islam Bachok Wittaya School evaluate the instruction of reading. This study belongs to qualitative research because only describes the situation and condition of applying reading instruction at the school. Since the number of population of this study is only two teachers so it should be taken as sample and it is named data source. The instruments that are used to collect data are observation, interview, and documentation. The data gotten was analyzed by narration procedure and discussed. The result of study shows the teachers usually apply cooperative learning “The Students Team Achievement Divisions” (STAD) in reading instruction (teaching learning process of reading). Using various methods or techniques aim to make the students not bored. The instructional system of reading skill that the English teachers of Mathayum Islam Bachok Wittaya School apply is effective. Based on the result of study, the English teachers of Mathayum Islam Bachok Wittaya School are suggested to take the students out class in learning reading because this way makes the students relax.
