The optimum mixing ratio of red ginseng, herbal medicine extracts, and oligosaccharides for diabetic improvement was investigated and verified through animal experiments. Using the optimum mixing technique, 2% red ginseng extract, 15% oligosaccharides, and 83% herbal medicine extracts were determined to be optimal for red ginseng beverages. The taste was improved as the amount of red ginseng decreased and oligosaccharides increased, whereas antioxidative activity was increased with increased red ginseng. In the animal model in which streptozotocin was administered to BALB-c mice, the red ginseng administration group exhibited lower blood glucose than the diabetic control group, and the blood glucose level was lower in the herbal medicine and red ginseng extract administration group. Insulin concentration was slightly increased by the red ginseng beverage, and hepatotoxicity due to excessive intake of red ginseng beverages was not detected.
The objectives of this study were to form comparisons of total polyphenol compounds, the antioxidant activities and the urushiol contents of lacquer tree(Rhus verniciflua) bark and the sensory properties of chicken soup was made with lacquer tree bark that was cultivated from different cultivation areas; Hamyang, Wonju and China. Total polyphenol contents of Hamyang, Wonju and China were estimated as 375.28±3.48, 403.60±6.6 and 311.06±4.99 ㎎/g. The total flavonoids contents of Hamyang, Wonju and China were measured as 374±14.12, 683.70±12.64 and 334.64±18.40 ㎎/g. The total phenolic compounds and flavonoids concentration, DPPH radical scavenging activity, and ABTS radical scavenging of lacquer tree cultivated in Wonju were higher than the others; Hamyang and China. The urushiol content of lacquer tree bark from Hamyang was 4.59±0.04 ppm and higher than others. Urushiol was not detected in China lacquer tree bark. Sensory evaluation tests for chicken soup containing lacquer tree bark showed that the scores of Wonju lacquer tree bark chicken soup was highest, however there are no differences between Hamyang, Wonju, and China significantly(p<0.05).
Cavernous sinus syndrome (CSS) is defined as the involvement of two or more of the third, fourth, fifth (V1, V2) or sixth cranial nerves or involvement of only one of them in combination with a neuroimaging-confirmed lesion in the cavernous sinus. Some cases of CSS are attributed to Tolosa-Hunt syndrome (THS), an idiopathic inflammatory disease of the cavernous sinus. THS is characterized by painful ophthalmoplegia due to granulomatous inflammation in the cavernous sinus. THS is a diagnosis of exclusion that requires a vigorous series of differential diagnoses, and corticosteroid therapy is known to dramatically resolve clinical findings of THS. We report a case of a patient with painful ophthalmoplegia associated with vision loss, which was suspected to be THS. This patient followed a relatively typical clinical course of THS on steroid pulse therapy. We emphasize the differential diagnosis of THS, its presentation, and treatment.KEY WORDS: Tolosa-hunt syndromeㆍVision lossㆍHigh dose steroids.
