Economic analysis of upland rice production in Ivo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State was done. Data were generated through structured questionnaire and oral interview schedules administered on one hundred and twenty rice farmers, which were selected randomly from the local government area. The data were analysed using Cobb Douglas production function, budgetary system and descriptive statistics. The results showed that Cobb Douglas production function was the lead equation because of highest R 2 = (0.7725) and highest number of significant variables. Thus 77.3% of the variation in rice output is explained by the variables included in the model. The elasticity of rice production showed that all inputs were inelastic since they all have marginal value products less than 1. The return to scale was greater than 1indicating an increasing return to scale. Resource use efficiency showed that the farmers did not achieve optimum allocative efficiency in the use of any of the farm resources. Net farm analysis showed that the total cost of production of rice was N69,280 per hectare with total revenue of N140,460. The net farm income was N71,180, which implies that rice production is profitable in the study area. Most farmers complained of poor access to credit and high cost of labour as major obstacles to rice production. Policies that will enable farmers to employ more of their production resources such as encouraging the retribution and reallocation of resources should be made possible in order to improve farmers, performances. Also, increasing farmers' access to production inpus; (fertilizer, improved varieties and land) were advocated.
Resource use efficiency of yam production among smallholder farmers in Southeast, Nigeria was studied. The specific objectives of the study are to estimate the costs and returns in yam production, determine the allocative efficiency of yam production among small holder farmers, determine the different effects of yam cropping activities to the environment and identify and describe the limiting factor to yam production in the study area. A multi-stage random sampling technique was used to select 240 farmers and from which information needed for the study were elicited using a structure questionnaire. Cost and returns analysis, allocative efficiency model and distributive statistics such as percentage response and frequency distribution table were used to capture the objectives of the study. The result shows that yam production was profitable in the study area. Also, result of the allocative efficiency of the inputs shows that the farmers did not attain optimal allocative efficiency, since they either under - utilized or over utilized their resources. Yam production activities in form of clearing, burning, pesticides use, fertilizer use and tillage could result in among others wild Life habitation, oxygen – carbon dioxide balance, erosion, effect aesthetic, increases soil temperature, reduction of soil nutrient, human health and welfare and conversion of organic nitrogen into mobile nitrates. The constraints to yam production were high cost of labour, poor access to credit, poor access to extension services and high cost of labour. Improving farmers’ access to credit, fertilizer and extension contact were recommended.
Objectives of the Study: The study examined the profitability of catfish production in Enugu –East L.G.A of Enugu state. Sample Size and Sampling Procedure: A purposive sampling technique was employed in the selection of 50 respondents used for the study. Method of Data Collection: Data for the study were collected using structured questionnaires and interview schedules. Method of Data Analysis: Descriptive statistics, gross-margin analysis and profitability ratios were used in analyzing the data. Results and Discussion: The result of the analysis showed that majority of the fish farmers (70%) were males and within the age range of 31 - 50 years. The result equally revealed that majority of the farmers (86%) had at least a National Diploma with about 5 -14 years fish farming experience. The result further indicated that cost of feed and fingerlings were the major cost component involved in catfish production. The gross margin analysis and profitability ratios revealed that catfish production is very profitable in the study area with a net income of about N576, 667 and a BCR of 1.6. The study however revealed that the high cost of farm inputs and poor credit facilities were the major constraints to catfish production in the area. Recommendations: It was recommended that more fish feed producers be encouraged into the business to reduce the high cost of feed.
