Most quantum system with short-ranged interactions show a fast decay of entanglement with the distance. In this Letter, we focus on the peculiarity of some systems to distribute entanglement between distant parties. Even in realistic models, like the spin-1 Heisenberg chain, sizable entanglement is present between arbitrarily distant particles. We show that long-distance entanglement appears for values of the microscopic parameters which do not coincide with known quantum critical points, hence signaling a transition detected only by genuine quantum correlations.
We investigate the transition to the insulating state in the one-dimensional Hubbard model with bond-charge interaction x (Hirsch model), at half-filling and T = 0. By means of the density-matrix renormalization group algorithm the charge gap closure is examined by both standard finite-size scaling analysis and looking at singularities in the derivatives of single-site entanglement. The results of the two techniques show that a quantum phase transition takes place at a finite Coulomb interaction uc(x) for x 0.5. The region 0 < u < uc turns out to have a superconducting nature, at least for not too large x > xc.
While the unique elastic properties of monolayer graphene have been extensively investigated, less knowledge has been developed so far on folded graphene. Nevertheless, it has been recently suggested that fold-induced curvature (without in-plane strain) could possibly affect the local chemical and electron transport properties of graphene, envisaging a material-by-design approach where tailored membranes are used in enhanced nanoresonators or nanoelectromechanical devices. In this work we propose a novel method combining apparent strain analysis from high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HREM) images and theoretical modeling based on continuum elasticity theory and tight-binding atomistic simulations to map and measure the nanoscale curvature of graphene folds and wrinkles. If enough contrast and resolution in HREM images are obtained, this method can be successfully applied to provide a complete nanoscale geometrical and physical picture of 3D structure of various wrinkle and fold configurations.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
