Proceedings.] CORRESPONDENCE ON PRESSURE OF CLAS. of the stresses pz and r2 was quite consistent with that for p and r, and consequently was acceptable from that standpoint. Professor Alexander was inclined to think, however, that possibly there might be other factors which in practical work would modify it. The Author deserved hearty congratulation on his valuable contribution. Author's efforts towards the derivation of acceptable working But'er* formulas for earth-resistances were full of interest. H e was prompted to call attention, however, to the necessity of keeping in mind, in this connection, the great difference that might exist between the values of 9 (the so-called angle of repose) under the 1 Minutes of Proceedings Inst. deserved thanks for the complete figures relating to loads, weights of materials, dimensions, erection of lifting span and its balancing, and the movements, during sinking, of caisson No. 4. Such information would be of great value for future reference. With regard to caisson No. 4, he would like to know if the section of the bank in Fig. 1, Plate 1, was t o be taken as agreeing with the original slope. If not, could the Author give a section of the original bank from the east abutment to the lowest point of the river-bed? Also, could the Author give a more precise indication of the character of the '' warp " ? The movement of the caisson westward apparently began as soon as the caisson was grounded on the bank, continued gradually till the elevation-13 was reached, and then increased by an amount equal to nearly three times .
