This paper aims to find out how games are important and effective when used in EFL classrooms. Two different kinds of qualitative research methods are used to gather the data. These are semi-structured interviews and observation. Multi-method triangulation is used throughout in this study. Kopinak (1999) defines multi-method triangulation as “gathering information pertaining to the same phenomenon through more than one method, primarily in order to determine if there is a convergence and hence, increased validity in research findings” (Kopinak, 1999: 171). Kopinak (1999) states that more detailed and multi-layered information about the fact under study would be provided from using more instruments. It is a case study in which 2 undergraduate students are taught English by using the game called ‘Twister’ which is adapted for teaching. The study sample consisted of people who are between 20-25 years old and live in Lefke. It was determined from the data that games should be employed in second language learning classrooms in terms of providing an atmosphere for EFL learners in which there are fun, motivation and high learning performance.Key words: games, Twister, vocabulary, EFL classrooms
Understanding a problem is as important as solving it to understand the meaning of mathematics. It is a widespread view that problem-solving skills help individuals to overcome the problems easily in their daily lives. An individual with problem-solving skills is a self-confident, creative and independent thinker. It can be explicable that the societies formed by these individuals can easily solve the problems. In this vein, this study is aimed to determine the relationship between the acquisition of problemsolving skills that play an important role in mathematics alongside two dimensions of classroom management which are time management and plan-program management. It is thought that there is a close relationship between these two dimensions; problemsolving skills. The types of problems are divided into two; routine and non-routine. The aim is to get opinions about how these problems will be taught by mathematics teachers, at what level they will be used in class and what methods they will use for them. The study was conducted by doing a content analysis of qualitative research methods. The sample group which is randomly determined from five provinces of North Cyprus is composed of mathematics teachers who teach at the 9th grade level. The data was collected through semi-structured interview forms. Content analysis technique was used in the evaluation of the obtained data. As a result, it was found out that the mathematics teachers who work in the Ministry of National Education and teach at the 9th grade, have been given importance to problem-solving skills such as, problem-solving duration and problem-solving methods in their classes. In addition, the teachers pointed out that the time given is not sufficient at schools and they could not give enough importance to plan-program activities. They also pointed out that although the annual and monthly plans specified by the Ministry, the desired variety of questions could not be provided by different methods.
In this research, teachers' opinions are determined based on human resources management functions in a private school. The research determined study groups with a purposive sampling method which is conducted with a qualitative research design, in the academic year, 2016 to 2017. Six teachers who work in a private school in Famagusta in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) participated in the study. The research data were collected by using a structure interview form and analyzed by content analysis and qualitative descriptive model. Two different researchers looked at the data and found out similar key words, and then themes were formed. The similarity index for inter-rater reliability was found as 90%. This is acceptable for qualitative research between five-seven categories. According to the research, Human Resources Management Functions include employee (personal selection/staffing, training and development, planning, evaluation, rewarding) and functions for the organization. All these functions are valid in educational institutions. Human research functions are successfully applied at this school where teachers reflect positive feeling towards their works and behaviors. Besides, research scope can be expanded with principals, students and parents in the scope of the subject.
The study is formed in order to investigate and reveal the importance and the acquisitions gained by students through History lesson to the high-school students studying in an institution connected to the Northern Cyprus Education System. In the scope of the subject included in the survey, students studying in 9th and 10th year at Lefkosa Turk High-School were directed questions by using an interview technique of qualitative research method to identify their opinion about the importance and what kind of benefits has provided by History Lesson and several results have been obtained. As a result of the survey, the data received from the opinion of students will reveal the significance of the study.
