Research shows that a small proportion of targets that experience more than one victimization comprise a disproportionate amount of total criminal victimizations. The characteristics that distinguish these incidents vary in terms of offense type, duration of time between victimizations and crime target. Due to these subtle, yet important differences, multiple terms have been used to describe these various types of recurring victimizations. Researchers have developed and tested theories to explain and predict recurring victimization, and have identified predictors that can inform the prevention of recurring victimization.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
