T HE relation between spark-potential, distance, and the pressure of the gas used in the discharge-chamber was obtained by Paschen t from a long series of experiments. His conclusion has been reaffirmed by Carr :~ fi'om a most satisfactory series of observations which covered a much wider range. He found that in all the gases examined, at any particular potential-difference used, the product of the gaspressure and the length of the spark-discharge is a constant. Thomson w in developing a theory of the spark-discharge, has found that the above relation can probably be extended to include all gases and "expressed by an equation of the * Communicated biy Prof..l.J. scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
