The main goal of this paper is to go some steps further to improve the understanding and manageability of air quality. Quality of atmospheric air in large cities is a matter of great importance because of its impact on the environment and on the health of the population. Recently, measures restricting access of private vehicles to the centre of large cities and other measures to prevent atmospheric air pollution are currently topical. The knowledge of air quality acquires special relevance to be able to evaluate the impact of those great social and economic measures. There are many indices to express air quality. In fact, quite every country has its own, depending on the main pollutants. In general, all indices ignore the compositional nature of the concentrations of air pollutants and do not apply methods of Compositional Data Analysis and have some other weak points such as leak of standardized scale. Therefore, the methodology used is founded on Compositional Data Analysis. The air quality index has an adequate correlation between input (concentrations) and output (air quality index), it distinguishes between air pollution and air quality and it has a 0-100 reference scale which makes easier interpretation and management of air quality expression. To illustrate the proposed method, an application is made to a series of air pollution data (Barcelona, 2001-2015). The results show the effectiveness of the 2008 European directive on ambient air quality.
The so-called Air Quality Index (AQI), expresses the quality of atmospheric air. The overall AQI is determined from the AQIs of some reference air pollutants, which are calculated by a transform of the respective concentrations. Concentrations of air pollutants are compositional data; they are expressed as part of mass of each pollutant in a total air volume or mass. Therefore, air pollution concentration data, as compositional data, just provide ratio information between concentrations of pollutants. Operations involved in the computation of overall AQI are not admissible operations in the framework of compositional data analysis, as they destroy the original ratio information. Consequently, the standard methodology should be reviewed for such calculations, taking into account the principles and operations of compositional data analysis. The objective of this article is to present a first approach to incorporate compositional perspective to air quality expression. For this, it is proposed to use a balance log-contrast of concentrations expressed in µg/m 3 to define a new kind of air quality indicator. Furthermore, the geometric mean of the concentrations is applied to obtain a new and simple scale air quality index, avoiding definition of piecewise linear interpolations used in the standard AQI computation. As an illustrative example, statistical analysis of atmospheric pollution data series (2004)(2005)(2006)(2007)(2008)(2009)(2010)(2011)(2012)(2013) of the city of Madrid (Spain) has been carried out.
Abstract-This document presents the use of a self-videorecording service for the integration and assessment of certain generic competences (oral and written communication, teamwork and third (English) language) in all degree programs related to the Industrial area at the Terrassa School of Engineering (EET). The resulting service allows to carry out the assessment through active and collaborative learning methodologies using ICT as a support, becoming an educational resource where students are encouraged to evaluate their own activity, individually and in groups (coevaluation), and with which the faculty can enhance certain sections of the syllabus while also evaluating generic competences. This paper outlines the rationale and design of the system based on self-recording-video that assists work on some generic competences. A preliminary experience has taken place and it has been carried out by volunteer students and some professors from the promoting team. It consisted of following all steps to obtain the video-recording as a result and fulfil the further assessment. Preparing the defence of the final project career, explaining the way a problem is faced are examples of use of the service endowed to assist the assessment of some generic competences.A good number of students and professors have participated in this preliminary experiment carried out on some subjects and in which oral effective communication will be assessed. A specific rubric for the assessment of generic competences has been used both for students and faculty. There is a summary of qualitative feedback from both students and instructors, and where several issues related to improving the self-assessment and self-video-recording system, are discussed. Finally, a survey is proposed, whose results will be helpful for its improvement.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
