Perosomus elumbis, an infrequently encountered congenital anomaly of unknown etiology, was studied in a female Holstein calf. This error of morphogenesis represents a set of multiorgan malformations that produce a deformity of the caudal one third of the fetus. In this case, the spinal and pelvic malformations were radiographed and then dissected. Intra-abdominal abnormalities of the soft tissues are also described. The normal sequential embryologic development of the vertebrate skeleton, anterior-posterior fetal positioning, and neural tube migration are discussed. An extensive literature of this birth defect in cattle (and sheep) is reveiwed. The reports from a period covering 165 years are compared with the pathologic features in this case. Chromosomal aberrations within the homeobox gene family are postulated to be contributory factors in the development of this type of dysorganogenesis.
A large oral squamous cell carcinoma in a 27-year-old Arabian stallion was removed by partial excision of the incisive bone. There was no gross evidence of recurrence or metastasis 5 months later.
A 9-year-old spayed/female Chinese Pug dog presented for evaluation of a mass located on the rostral aspect of the tongue. An incisional biopsy was acquired, submitted, and interpreted as a possible granular cell tumor based on hematoxylin and eosin, and periodic acid Schiff histopathologic staining characteristics. The diagnosis was supported by immunohistochemical evaluation that was positive for S-100, vimentin, and neuron-specific enolase. Based on the absence of mitotic figures in the incisional biopsy, a partial glossectomy was performed with gross margins of at least 1-cm. The excisional biopsy revealed significant features of malignancy, with neoplastic cells in close association with peripheral nerves, consistent with malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor. Tumor-free margins were obtained, and the glossectomy had expected healing with no recurrence apparent 6-months following surgery.
The phenomenal and nonphenomenal self-concepts of 120 handicapped students (emotionally disturbed, educable mentally retarded, learning disabled, speech/language impaired) were compared to those of30 nonhandicapped students. The Piers-Harris Children's Self Concept Scale, a self reporting instrument, was used to assess phenomenal (conscious) attitudes toward the self. The Human Figure Drawing Test, a projective measure, was administered to assess nonphenomenal (unconscious) attitudes regarding the self The results indicated that handicapped students had significantly more negative phenomenal and nonphenomenal self concepts; higher anxiety levels; more negative perceptions of their intellectual abilities, school status, and popularity; and more emotional feelings of insecurity, inadequacy, guilt, impulsivity, and immaturity than nonhandicapped students.
