Eleocharis dulcis is a swamp plant has potential as a traditional medicine. The purpose of this study was to compare the results of determining specific and non-specific parameters on simplicia and methanol extract of purun tikus’s stems. Determination of specific parameters includes organoleptic, macroscopic - microscopic tests, water soluble extract content, ethanol soluble extract content and phytochemical screening such as testing for alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins and steroids/triterpenoids. Determination of non-specific parameters includes drying shrinkage, determination of total ash content, acid insoluble ash content and heavy metal contamination. The results of the study on the specific parameters of stem extract showed that the simplicia powder was light brown in color, had a characteristic odor that was not pungent and had a bitter taste and on microscopic examination only the simplicia could be observed epidermis, transport bundles, parenchyma and collenchyma fragments,. The results of the non-specific simplicia characterization test showed drying shrinkage of 8.91%, total ash content of 13.79%, acid insoluble ash content of 6.89%. The results showed that both simplicia and methanol extract of purun tikus’s stems met the general requirements for specific and non-specific characteristics except for the total ash content of the simplicia which was declared not eligible.
Background: Binjai leaves (Mangifera caesia Jack. ex. Wall) or M. caesia contain phenolic and flavonoid compounds important in medicinal plants development. The solvent difference and fractionation will give various active substance concentrations. Objective: To evaluate the phenolic and flavonoid content qualitatively and quantitatively from the n-hexane fraction of binjai leaves methanol extract. Methods: The soxhletation method with methanol was used to extract binjai leaves followed by fractionation. Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) followed by spraying reagents were used to test phenols and flavonoids compounds. Folin-Ciocalteu reagents were used to analyzed total phenolics, while AlCl3 reagents were used to quantify the total flavonoid content. Result: This study gave positive results on the qualitative test of phenolics and flavonoids. Meanwhile, the fraction assay results showed total phenolic levels of 45.19 µgGAE/mg and total flavonoid levels of 165.06 µgQE/mg. Conclusion: The n-hexane fraction of M. caesia leaves methanol extracts contains phenols and flavonoid content so that it has the potential as a medicinal plant. Keywords: Binjai leaves, methanol extracts, n-hexane fraction, phenol, flavonoid
Toddlers in South Kalimantan who experience nutritional problems on indicators of Weight/Height, namely underweight category, at a prevalence of 5.5% above national figure of 3.9%. Data from Guntung Payung Health Center in showed there 38% of under-fives with underweight nutritional status and 9% of very thin nutritional status. One of preventive measures for undernourished toddlers is provision of supplementary food containing high protein. Research sample was 38 toddlers with a history of getting supplementary food High Protein for 3 months selected using purposive sampling method. Nutritional status of children under five was obtained using anthropometric method. BB/TB was used in assessing nutritional status with target of wasting toddlers. Research method using crosssectional with statistical test using paired t-test with a significance level of <0.05. The results showed an increase in percentage of children under five with normal nutritional status from 65.8% to 68.4%. After not receiving high protein supplementary food, percentage of children under five with normal nutritional status decreased to 63.2%. There was no significant difference in nutritional status of children under five years old based on BB/TB. In addition, there's no difference between nutritional status of children under five after implementation of supplementary food Recovery and during study.
