The article investigates the influence of the carbody vertical flexibility on the ride comfort of the railway vehicles. The ride comfort is evaluated via the comfort index calculated in three reference points of the carbody. The results of the numerical simulations bring attention to the importance of the carbody symmetrical vertical bending upon the dynamic response of the vehicle, mainly at high velocities. Another conclusion is that the ride comfort can be significantly affected as a function of the symmetrical bending frequency of the carbody. Similarly, there are improvement possibilities for the ride comfort when the best selection of the stiffness in the longitudinal traction system between the carbody and bogie and the vertical suspension damping is made.
The paper investigates the effects of mechanical wheel slide protection devices (WSPD) on the braking capacity for coaches equipped with disc or cast iron block brakes. Decelerations and jerks, that affect the passengers comfort, are also analyzed. An original simulation program, based on experimentally determined air pressure evolutions in brake cylinder is used for this purpose. Results of numerical simulations show that in the case of repeated actuations of mechanical WSPDs, disc brake vehicles are more affected in terms of braking capacity. Regarding jerks during braking actions, in both normal and low adhesion conditions, vehicles equipped with high power cast iron block brake with two pressure levels prove to be more affected.
The main target of the study is to highlight, by means of numerical simulations, the advantages and possible drawbacks of using composite materials instead of the classical cast iron to equip the brake system of railway freight vehicles. The qualitative and quantitative evaluations refer mainly to the braking capacity by considering as main parameter the stopping distance, in various operational conditions. Results indicate that composite materials are more efficient in the braking process, but in the case of low speeds, the recommendation is to perform earlier and/or stronger braking actions than usual, in classical cast iron equipment on rolling stock.
