Lupus anticoagulant-Inhibitors of coagulation An anticoagulant which prolongs the partial thromboplastin time (PTT) and occasionally the prothrombin time (PT) of normal plasma, but does not specifically inactivate any of the known clotting factors, is designated the "lupus" anticoagulant. The Working Party on Acquired Inhibitors of Coagulation of the International Committee has attempted to answer two questions regarding the "lupus" anticoagulant: 1. How sensitive are the various tests and reagents in detecting this inhibitor? 2. How can the lupus anticoagulant best be distinguished from other anticoagulantsespecially those that are associated with bleeding?
