Purpose The purpose of this study is expected to reveal the relationship between organizational commitment and turnover intention in the tourism and hospitality literature with more generalizable results, and thus, provide researchers with a new perspective for future studies. In this context, Individual studies that examined the relationship between organizational commitment and turnover intention in the tourism and hospitality industry were systematically identified by a comprehensive literature review. Design/methodology/approach Individual studies were synthesized and analyzed via a meta-analysis method to reveal whether any relationship exists between organizational commitment and turnover intention and to estimate the direction and intensity of the relationship in a more reliable and comprehensive manner. The analyses were carried out on 13 scientific papers that met the inclusion criteria. Findings Results showed that a moderate negative relationship exists between organizational commitment and turnover intention of employees in the tourism and hospitality industry. In this context, individuals who have emotional commitments to their institutions will have lower turnover intentions than others. The right personal selection, performance evaluation techniques, promotion, training and development opportunities, career opportunities and talent management and functional virtues such as strong communication, trust and justice will not only reinforce organizational commitment but also attract talented individuals to an organization and ensure employee retention. Originality/value In the current study, individual studies focusing on the relationship between organizational commitment and turnover were cumulatively collected, synthesized and analyzed. By way of providing a review of individual studies, the study provides cumulative and reliable evidence to the literature regarding the relationship between organizational commitment and turnover, and hence, contributes to the further progression of the field. The study is also the first meta-analysis carried out on the subject in question.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Problematic Mobile Phone Use Scale (PMPUS) for Turkish Adolescents. The psychometric properties of PMPUS were tested in two separate sample groups that consisted of 950 Turkish high school students. The first sample group (n=309) was used to determine the factor structure of the scale. The second sample group (n=461) was used to test data conformity with the identified structure, discriminant validity and concurrent scale validity, internal consistency reliability calculations, and item statistics calculations. The results of exploratory factor analyses indicated that the scale had three factors: interference with negative effect, compulsion/persistence, and withdrawal/tolerance. The results showed that item and construct reliability values yielded satisfactory rates in general for the three-factor construct. On the other hand, the average variance extracted value remained below the scale value for three subscales. The scores for the scale significantly correlated with depression and loneliness. In addition, the discriminant validity value was above the scale in all sub-dimensions except one. Based on these data, the reliability of the PMPUS scale appears to be satisfactory and provides good internal consistency. Therefore, with limited exception, the PMPUS was found to be reliable and valid in the context of Turkish adolescents.
The aim of this study was to identify trends in tourism literature in bibliometric terms by analyzing scientific studies carried out over the past decade and to reveal the similarities and differences of the trends between Turkey originated and other international publications. The research data comprised of 4473 studies published between 2007-2016 in the top-five journals of tourism field according to the Journal Citation Reports and 213 Turkey-originated studies published in 19 tourism and hospitality journals. The journals were examined in terms of number and types of publications, author-institution-country productivity, citation analysis, conceptual orientations and citation burst. In order to reveal the links between key words and the leading studies, social network analysis was utilized. Social network analysis facilitates mapping the links in a research community and specifying the key actors for the field development. According to research findings, experimental researches were observed to have an important place in both Turkey originated and other international publications. It was determined that topics of organizational behavior and management fields were studied the most, particularly the concepts such as attitude, perception, intention, experience, behavior and satisfaction were measured. Turkey originated publications often addressed conflict and behavior issues whereas other international publications focused on sustainable tourism, destinations, local people and travel experiences. It is considered that the research results would enable individuals interested in tourism discipline, in both scientific and sectorial terms, to have an overview of the research scope and intellectual framework of the field.
