Infection of SJL/J mice with the lactate dehydrogenase virus resulted in a greater increase in the plasma activities of lactate dehydrogenase, malate dehydrogenase, and isocitrate dehydrogenase than expected from findings with other inbred strains. Evidence is presented to suggest that the differences are due to an exaggerated reduction in the clearance of these enzymes. It is postulated that the data signify a deficiency in the function of the reticuloendothelial system of SJL/J mice. 178 C.G. Most of the experiments utilized male as well as female animals, 8 to 12 weeks old. However, except for the initial studies on plasma LDH levels, only data obtained from female mice will be reported. Strain BALB/c mice of the same ages and of both sexes were used for controls. These were supplied, as needed, through the courtesy of Dr. CEARLnS P. DAGG. None of the animals had reticulum cell neoplasms at autopsy, which was never later than 16 weeks of age.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
