Kratzer and Brezonik's (1981) report illustrates that for nitrogen-limited lakes, similar to many of the Florida lakes, the use of trophic state indices (TSI), which assume or imply that there is a constant relationship between Secchi disk depth (SD) or total phosphorus (TP) and chlorophyll a (CHA), can lead to erroneous conclusions. However, I find fault with their procedure of averaging the lesser of a TP TSI and total nitrogen (TN) TSI with a SD TSI and CHA TSI to compute an
This report is an element of the comprehensive body of information developed as part of the NAWQA Program. The program depends heavily on the advice, cooperation, and information from many Federal, State, interstate, Tribal, and local agencies and the public. The assistance and suggestions of all are greatly appreciated.

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
