As the economy of Malaysian government has transformed from a typical economy to human capital economy, the demand for Technical and Vocational Education & Training (TVET) institutions as a platform to develop human capital is also increasing. TVET based institutions in Malaysia are known as formal and informal learning sector which provide youthful people with the expertise and skills needed in the work sector. However, TVETbased qualifications and careers in Malaysia are perceived poorly and does not receive recognition in the workplace in terms of employability. These institutions cannot achieve their predetermined goals without effective leadership as the success and failure of the objectives depend on lecturers. Over the last three decades, transformational leadership has achieved legitimacy that has been showed to be an effective and influential enabler especially in developing employees' attitudes and behaviours. Thus, the aim of present research is determining the role of lecturer's transformational leadership in effecting students' employability. This study was conducted in ten (10) Technical and Vocational Education & Training (TVET) institutions located at Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak. A total of 350 final year students were involved in this research which used the quantitative research design approach. Pearson correlations, linear regression and multiple regressions analysis were used to analyse the collected data. The findings indicated that lecturer's transformational leadership significantly and positively correlated with students' employability. In addition, the result also indicated that students' employability can be affected by role of lecturer's transformational leadership style. Based on the findings, it is indicated that lecturers must display an effective inspirational motivation, idealized influence, individualized consideration and intellectual stimulation which will then stimulate employability development among students especially in TVET institutions.
The change in teachers' teaching methods since the world was hit by the Covid-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the country's education system. Teachers need to implement blended teaching and learning (T&L) through the use of digital media with traditional online methods as the main mechanism of knowledge delivery. Therefore, this study was conducted to examine the challenges of teachers and government initiatives in the implementation of T&L. The design of this study uses qualitative method by analyzing documents through data sources of previous studies, the records of learning development blended e-learning groups under MOE, telegrams, websites, quotes and news from Malaysia and abroad. The main challenge used is related to internet access for those living in rural areas. Other challenges are also found in underprivileged families and it is difficult to provide data facilities and gadgets to children for T&L virtually. MOE provides initiative for students who do not have internet access to browse Google Classroom (GC), they can opt to use WhatsApp. MOE and Uniceff also provide teaching materials that use Google Slides for students with hearing problems and presentations that can be made with subtitles. In addition, the government also uses GC through the establishment of e-learning email accounts. This study has implications for teachers to strengthen blended teaching through digital technology creatively and innovative with live courses and training. Parents and teachers need to make a paradigm shift for the latest technological knowledge for this problem. Hence, MOE needs to formulate or improve the education curriculum in accordance with this blended learning.
Art appreciation is a part of the field of art criticism. Art appreciation involves the elements and principles of art. This study aims to identify the level of students' understanding and problems during the application of art appreciation sessions in teaching and learning in primary school. This study uses a qualitative approach in the form of a case study. Data analysis was collected using interview, observation and document analysis to observe pupils' behavior and understanding level. Two students from Year 6 and one visual art teacher were selected as the participants of the study. The data were analyzed descriptively. Participants of the study were selected on purposive sampling. The findings show that students' level of understanding the element of art is low. In addition, students are less fluent in Malay Language which made them unable to perform the session with a good art appreciation. The way of teaching is also not focused on aesthetic perceptions. This problem causes students to become less interested and less confident. Therefore, researchers suggested that teachers be given a comprehensive overview of how to carry out art appreciation sessions in school to ensure that their artwork can be appreciated by the students.
“Ini Saya Punya Kerja: Manifestasi Dua Seni” is a collaborative exhibition organised by Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris, University of Malaya, and Yayasan Usman Awang. The exhibition combines academics, painters, and poets to manifest the merger of two arts, the visual arts and the literary arts. The exhibition was officiated by Tan Sri Johan Jaaffar at the University of Malaya Art Gallery on Sunday, 13 February 2020, at 10.00 am. A total of 37 painters with 74 artworks consisting of paintings, installations, sculptures, and photographs were exhibited. All works were translations of the poems written by National Laureate Usman Awang. The most dominant style was abstract expressionism characterised by free spontaneous lines accompanied by bright colours and spontaneous brush strokes. Among the painters with this style were Suzlee Ibrahim (Pahlawan, 2009), Lily Noguchi (Jentayu, 2019), Liu Cheng Hua (Anak Jiran Tionghua, 2019), Sabri Salleh (Duri dan Api, 2019), and Mustafa Salleh (Pahlawan, 2019). There were also semi-abstract works. Among the painters who adopted this style were Haron Mokhtar (Balada Terbunuhnya Beringin Tua di Pinggir Sebuah Bandaraya, 2019), Aizat Amir (Jiwa Hamba, 2019), and Abdul Raoof Ali (Keranda 152, 2019). There were also painters that produced realistic works. Among them were Md Nasir Ibrahim (Bunga Popi 1, 2019 and Bunga Popi II, 2020), and Mohamad Hassan (Tulang-tulang Berserakan: Saksi-saksi Bisu, 2019). The exhibition has achieved the goal of translating Usman Awang’s poems into visual form. Painters were able to play with the semiotic visuals that were a priority in this study.
The use of technologies such as Computer-Aided Design (CAD) is significant and has a profound effect on the Creative Design Process. The widely studied process in Creativity research such as Divergent Thinking (DT), Convergent Thinking (CT), and Analogical Thinking (AT) can describe the Creative Design during the process of producing and the implementation of ideas. The article employs the Descriptive Phenomenological method by collecting verbalized data from seven participants who are at the time of this study are enrolled in a Design Course, specifically Graphic Design. Three design projects are designed specifically to collect verbalized data through the think-aloud and stimulated recall method. Another data source that is used to support interpretation are screen recordings of the of the participants Creative Design process. The findings include seven themes that are associated with the experience of Creative Design and are used to describe the Creative Design Process with CAD through DT, CT, and AT and their relationship through the transformations of conceptual knowledge and technical skills. The article then discusses the role of Conceptual and Technical Knowledge that went through the process of selection and mapping in AT to induce DT and CT in ideation and its expansion through the process of learning. Finally, the article will present the limitations of this study and suggestions for future research. Keywords: Creative design process; divergent thinking; convergent thinking; analogical thinking; Computer-Aided Design (CAD)
