This study conducted a systematic review following the guidelines of the PRISMA statement, with the aim of analyzing the scientific production on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in in-service and pre-service mathematics teachers. Out of 211 articles identified in the indexed databases, WOS, SCOPUS, and SciELO, 16 were selected for an exhaustive analysis. It was determined that this topic is still in the process of development, focusing on aspects such as learning content, pedagogy, and the learning environment. Most studies employed qualitative methodologies. Contextualization in sustainability is the most advanced competency. The results highlight the importance of continuing to investigate and develop effective strategies to integrate ESD in the continuous education and training of mathematics teachers. It is essential to address the development of competencies in ecological and mediational facets, ensure solid knowledge of mathematical content, employ adequate pedagogical strategies, and understand the relationship between the environment and mathematics. These findings offer insights into the prevailing trend of integrating ESD into mathematics education through ESD elements and didactic competencies, as evidenced by recent studies involving both practicing and pre-service teachers. This understanding may promote the enhancement of the quality of mathematics education practices within this domain.
The objective of our study is to know the perception of Chilean university students toward the pedagogical methodologies in online English classes during the COVID-19 pandemic. We applied a questionnaire (built by fifteen experts, validated through a pilot test of 34 students, and improved with licensed 21.0 version SPSS in terms of consistency) to 341 students from different university programs. We analyzed the responses quantitatively and qualitatively and found out that 75% of the 341 students surveyed have shown agreement with the pedagogical methodologies applied in online classes and motivation in learning due to the permanent concern and communication of the teacher in charge. Besides, the students have also yielded satisfactory learning outcomes. These results reveal that the online English teaching of Chilean higher education during the pandemic has been good and indirectly show the willingness of Chilean university teachers to receive relevant and continuous training to deliver quality education. In 2022, many countries have returned to face-to-face classes, but we believe that the pedagogical methodologies used in this research could serve as a reference for teachers or researchers worldwide who wish to incorporate into their face-to-face classes a part of online teaching and do research on online English teaching.
Background: There is a relationship between a country's progress and the statistical formation of its citizens, where the statistical reasoning of mathematics teachers is crucial to increase this relationship. Objective: To determine the level of statistical reasoning on hypothesis tests of future Chilean mathematics teachers. Design: The methodology used is a quantitative transectional approach. The SOLO (Structure of the Observed Learning Outcome) taxonomy was used to characterise the pre-service teachers' level of knowledge of the main concepts of hypothesis testing. Settings and participants: Chilean students from V to VIII level of Pedagogy in Mathematics who passed the statistics subjects of the formative itinerary, subjects that include the topic of hypothesis testing. Data collection and analysis: Through a consecutive non-probabilistic sampling and an instrument previously validated by expert judges, a sample made up of 29 of 43 pre-service teachers was analysed, obtaining a representation of 67% of the target population. Result: There was enough evidence to affirm that the per-service teachers' statistical reasoning is in prestructural and unistructural levels of the SOLO taxonomy regarding their knowledge of the statistical hypothesis tests. Conclusion: It is necessary to correct this situation by means of remedial tools before those students graduate and begin teaching.
Purpose This study aims to investigate the impact of regular Kung Fu and Taekwondo practice on the health and quality of life among elderly individuals in the Maule region, Chile. Design/methodology/approach The authors designed a 12-week Kung Fu and Taekwondo workshop with activities suitable for their age. Through semistructured interviews (at the beginning and the end of the workshop), along with periodic monitoring of vital signs and cardiovascular components, the authors observed an improvement in participants’ physical (strength, speed of reaction and flexibility) and psychological conditions (self-esteem and resilience), quality of life (relationships with family and friends and ability to deal with stressful events in working life) and health (waist circumference, percentage of oxygen saturation in blood, blood pressure, among other values). Findings From these results, the authors affirm that this workshop improves health and physical condition and helps the participants develop the coping capacity to deal with stressful situations and complicated interpersonal relationships. In this sense, the authors conclude that Kung Fu and Taekwondo as regular sports activities can benefit senior citizens’ aging process. Originality/value This research is based on an original study project.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
