ObjectivesThe quality of management of hyperuricemia has remained sub-optimal owing to unavoidable toxicities, limitations, and dearth of novel advances. Homeopathy has remained under-researched in hyperuricemia. We investigated the clinical effectiveness of three treatment regimens – individualized homeopathy (IH), Urtica urens mother tincture (UUMT), and both (IH + UUMT) along with lifestyle modifications in a sample of 90 patients with hyperuricemia.MethodsAn open, randomized (1:1:1), 3 parallel arms (IH, UUMT, and IH + UUMT), pragmatic trial was conducted at National Institute of Homoeopathy, Kolkata. Outcome measures were serum uric acid (primary), Gout Assessment Questionnaire version 2 (GAQ2, secondary), and Measure Yourself Medical Outcome Profile version 2 (MYMOP2, secondary); all measured at baseline, and after 3 and 6 months. Intention- to-treat sample was analyzed to detect group differences by unpaired t tests.ResultsAttrition rate was 8.9% (IH: 3, UUMT: 3, IH + UUMT: 2). Groups were comparable at baseline. Reductions in serum uric acid over 3 months were comparatively higher (p=0.057) in the UUMT group than others, however, the differences were narrowed over 6 months (p=0.119). Per protocol analysis of serum uric acid level revealed similar trend of significantly higher reduction in the UUMT group than the other two (3 months: p=0.001; 6 months: p=0.007). No significant differences existed in reductions of GAQ2 scores among the three groups. Few significant differences were detected in MYMOP scores over 3 months favoring IH against others (symptom 2, p=0.001 and wellbeing score, p=0.002), and also over 6 months favoring IH + UUMT against others (symptom 1, p<0.001).ConclusionAlthough all three therapies showed similar improvements, the IH + UUMT group had more positive direction of effects than IH or UUMT alone; however, no definite conclusion could be arrived at. Further trials are warranted with larger sample size. Trial registration: CTRI/2018/05/014026.
Introduction Urolithiasis is a very common disease. Stones in any part of the urinary tract can produce symptoms and complication, but because the lower part of the ureter is the narrowest part of the urinary tract, stones get lodged easily producing pain and haematuria commonly. If we keep in mind the limitation and complication of the surgical procedure, homoeopathy can provide a real solution for such conditions. There are several ways of homeopathic prescription, such as based on keynotes, general symptoms, constitution, miasm, etc. Two cases of ureteric calculi are presented here, who were prescribed on the basis of constitutional symptoms and got good results. Case Profile In the first case, the only symptom was pain in the right flank, and as per ultrasonography (USG) report, there was 7.4 mm calculus in the lower part of the right ureter. In the second case, there were symptoms like pain in the left flank, burning urination and haematuria. The USG report confirmed 6 mm stone in the left ureterovesical junction (UVJ). After detailed case taking, both the cases were prescribed on the basis of constitutional symptoms. Lycopodium in 50 millesimal potencies (0/1–0/4) in the first case and Phosphorus in centesimal potency (1M) in the second case provided prompt relief of the symptoms within a short period. USG reports of both the cases also confirmed no stones after approximately 2 months of treatment. Conclusion Homeopathy provided good relief in two cases of ureteric calculi; constitutional medicines were found useful in combating acute ureteric colic and facilitating expulsion of stones. Because the constitutional symptoms matched, the polychrest homoeopathic medicines like Lycopodium and Phosphorus produced their best effect. But the inferences drawn from the two case reports may not be sufficient to reach a definitive conclusion. So clinical trials to establish the efficacy of constitutional remedies in the treatment of ureteric calculi are suggested.
Introduction Formation of stone in the urinary tract, kidney, ureter and bladder is called as Urolithiasis. Formation of urinary stones is very common. About 5-15% population are affected with urinary stone, and, therefore, causes high morbidity in comparison to the above types of stone formation. Shock wave lithotripsy and ureteroscopy along with conservative treatments are the most common approaches for the treatment of calculi, although considered as expressive in one hand, and on the other hand, such interventions may lead to complications. Therefore, alternative medicines give a second thought for the treatment of urolithiasis because it avoids surgical interventions. Here we present a case study for the successful treatment of urolithiasis by a homoeopathic medicine Lycopodium clavatum in a 43 years old male. Case Profile A 43-year-old male patient with intense pain in the right loin for 5-6 days, increased frequency of urination, ineffectual urination, severe pain during urination, and finally with the pain score was 9, was considered for treatment in the present study. Based on his complete case history, Lycopodium clavatum at potencies of 0/1 to 0/6 was prescribed to him. Conclusion Correct homoeopathic organ specific or constitutional formulation(s) selected based on specific important symptoms can also be efficacious in diseases such as ureteric stone. Constitutional medicine Lycopodium clavatum is usually prescribed when the patient is with right side pain with ureteric stone and it is justified in the present case report. Randomized control trial is suggested to ascertain the results obtained in the present study i.e. successful treatment of urolithiasis with the constitutional homeopathic formulation Lycopodium clavatum.
Background: Skin diseases being one of the most prevalent human ailments continue to increase the disease burden worldwide. The prevalent modern treatments of skin diseases are palliative and very difficult to cure. This case report is an attempt to explore the effectiveness of individualized homoeopathic medicines in the treatment of skin diseases. Methods: A female patient of 42 years presented with the symptoms of ulceration with itching and sticky discharges coming out from the left palm and webs of fingers. This case of diagnosed infectious eczematous dermatitis was taken at the outpatient department of the National Institute of Homoeopathy, Kolkata and got treated with individualized homoeopathic medicines. Results: The patient was prescribed initially Graphites in LM potency showing much improvement and lastly followed with Causticum as the case demanded. Conclusion: Individualized homoeopathic treatment may be an effective option for the treatment of infectious eczematous dermatitis.
