This article aims to inform the reader about current knowledge of the effects of aminoglycosides on hearing. The hearing loss caused by aminoglycosides is permanent and can negatively affect the individual's quality of life. Although treatment with aminoglycosides cannot be avoided in some instances, timely intervention can minimise the impact of the hearing loss on the individual's everyday life. The discussion includes the incidence of aminoglycoside-induced hearing loss and predisposing factors. In addition, monitoring and management of cochlear ototoxicity is described.
A general method is described for effecting the intramolecular Diels–Alder reaction of the furan diene in which the side arm connecting the diene to the dienophile contains four carbon atoms. The use of 1.1 equivalents of methylaluminum dichloride at −78 °C for 2–8 h shifts the Diels–Alder equilibrium towards the products and provides the oxatricyclo adducts in good to excellent yield. Catalytic quantities of methylaluminum dichloride (10 mol%) provided a higher quantity of adduct than excess Lewis acid when the enone was substituted with alkyl groups. The scope was extended to include a precursor containing a five carbon atom side arm, and two examples containing acetylenic dienophiles that were activated by a carbonyl moiety on the side arm. Precursors having a four carbon atom side arm provided only oxatricyclo adducts having the side arm syn to the oxygen bridge. The assignment of the stereochemistry of the oxatricyclo adducts is discussed in detail.
Two studies showed that adults who reported having an imaginary companion as a child differed from adults who did not on certain personality dimensions. The first yielded a higher mean on the Gough Creative Personality Scale for the group who had imaginary companions. Study 2 showed that such adults scored higher on the Achievement and Absorption subscales of Tellegen's Multidimensional Personality Questionnaire. The results suggest that some differences reported in the developmental literature may be observed in adults.
1,4] O f C and [1,4] C f O rearrangements are described for a variety of furans and thiophenes. Treatment of 3-((silyloxy)methyl)furans and -thiophenes with n-BuLi in HMPA provided 2-silylated-3-(hydroxymethyl)furans and -thiophenes in good to excellent yields. The reaction was shown by crossover studies to proceed via an intramolecular [1,4] O f C silyl migration. Silyl esters of 3-furoic acids also underwent an intramolecular [1,4] O f C silyl migration to provide 2-silylated-3-furoic acids in moderate to good yield when treated with a mixture of LDA and HMPA. Finally, the above silyl migrations were shown to be reversible. Treatment of 2-silylated-3-(hydroxymethyl)furans and -thiophenes with NaH in DMF provided 3-((silyloxy)methyl)furans and -thiophenes in excellent yields via a [1,4] C f O silyl migration. The [1,4] C f O silyl migration was also shown to be an intramolecular process by a crossover study.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
