This bibliography is a continuation of and a complement to those published in the Urban History Yearbook 1974-91 and Urban History 1992-96. It aims to provide comprehensive coverage of recently published British books and periodical articles. It also includes an extensive selection of material published in France and the United States provided by our foreign correspondents. To all of the assistants and to Stuart Blumin in particular, their help is gratefully acknowledged. No doubt we will have overlooked some items and will gratefully receive notification of any significant omissions. The arrangement and format closely follows that of previous years, cross-references are provided where necessary, and there is an index of towns on p. 442. Where no place of publication is given, this is because it is not cited in the British National Bibliography. Rather than reproducing the entire list of periodicals which were consulted, a reduced list identifies only those from which articles cited this year have been taken.
