Aluminum hydride (AlH3) has been identified as a promising H2 storage material for soldier wearable power applications. Presented is the development and performance of a wearable 20W AlH3 based fuel cell system which has achieved a high energy density (582 Wh/kg for a 20W/72 h load) while maintaining a small size (0.7 kg, 0.622 L). The paper also reviews AlH3 properties and safety aspects. Soldier system evaluation as well as future developments are also discussed.
