15746 ABSTRACT Objective: The present study aims to improve knowledge on vegetable cowpea through the assessment of agronomic performances of 12 varieties. Methodology and results: The varieties were evaluated in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three (03) replications using 12 quantitative variables at the Kamboinsé research station 2018. The study revealed the existence of important agronomic variability within the studied varieties. Positive and significant correlations were also observed between variables. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) identified days to 50% flowering; the chlorophyll content (SPAD); days to vegetable cowpea; days to 95% maturity; number of seeds per pod, pods weight, seeds weight, fodder weight, seeds yield and fodder yield as the most relevant parameters. The best variety was niébé baguette grimpant, with the earliest days to vegetable cowpea (50 days) and days to maturity (63 days). Conclusion and application of results: The variety IT83S-872 has been identified as the highest pods productive (77 pods). The variety Komsare recorded a very appreciable seeds (2.72 t/ha) and fodder (3.20 t/ha) yield. However, the variety IT85F-2887 was exceptional, in addition to its earliness for days to vegetable cowpea (50 days) and days to maturity (65 days), it recorded the best seeds (2.63 t/ha) and fodder (3.67 t/ha) yields. These early maturing, high seeds and fodder producing varieties, could substitute common beans and effectively contribute to the improvement of cowpea production in Burkina Faso. Key words: Vegetable cowpea, agronomic performance, fodder, Burkina Faso.
Vegetable Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) is one of the neglected legumes in Burkina Faso, and as a result, its genetic diversity remains poorly known. The main aim of this study was to know its genetic variability through an agro-morphological characterization. Twenty vegetable cowpea varieties were evaluated at the Kamboinsé Environmental, Agricultural and Training Research Center following a three-replication Fischer block design under rainfed conditions. Fifteen quantitative and nine qualitative variables were collected and subjected to various statistical analyses. Analysis of variance was significant for the variables 50% flowering, vegetable cowpea date, number of pods obtained per plant, number of seeds per pod, fresh pod weight, fresh pod yield, pod length, plant height, seed length and chlorophyll content. Strong correlations were also reported between the various variables. The observed diversity is structured in three morphological groups viz., Group 1 consists of individuals with early flowering, high chlorophyll content and the number of pods obtained per plant. Group 2 brings together the varieties of average agronomic performance for pod length, the number of pods per plant, number of days at 95% maturity, fresh pod weight, yield of fresh pods and group 3 of varieties with long pods, early green date, high pod weight and good fresh pod yield. Among the tested varieties, the varieties IT83S-872 (30 pods), IT84S-2246 (27 pods), Baguette (25 pods), IT83S-818 (26 pods), and IT85F-2682 (24 pods) stood out for their high pod production. In addition, the varieties of vegetable cowpea baguette, baguette grimpant, Telma, and IT83S-911 showed the best performance in terms of early vegetable cowpea date stage, longest pods, highest pod weight and best yield of fresh pods. The high genetic variability level within the tested varieties could be exploited in future green cowpea breeding programmes.
Vegetable cowpea is eaten mainly fresh, in the form of young, immature pods, tender and sweet like the common bean. However, like cowpea with seeds, vegetable cowpea experience yield losses due to the cowpea aphid-borne mosaic virus (CABMV). This study aims to improve yields through the development of vegetable cowpea varieties resistant to CABMV. The study focused on ten varieties of vegetable cowpea, carried out in a greenhouse at the Kamboinsé research station using a randomized complete block design with three replications, all inoculated with CABMV. The data collection concerned resistance parameters. Mechanical inoculation made it possible to observe various symptoms of CABMV, thus highlighting the existence of variability within the varieties tested. Strong correlations were observed between several variables. Thus, the varieties of vegetable cowpea IT85F-2089-5, UG-CP-8, IT85F-2805-5 and Telma were identified as resistant, because belonging to the low severity classes and having a low value of area under the disease progress curve. On the other hand, the varieties RW-CP-5, UG-CP-6, IT83S-911, niébé baguette grimpant possessing a high severity class were judged to be susceptible. These resistant varieties will thus be able to contribute to the improvement of production and the protection of cowpea resources in Burkina.
