This paper outlines the major requirements and concepts of a computer-aided learning aid for power electronic systems and gives the characteristics of a prototype of an expert system named CATPELS. The open architecture of the run-time version of the CATPELS software provides not only the basic information for beginners and all the required tools for specialists but also provides the capabilities to customize one's specific requirements. The main characteristics of CATPELS and the user facilities are also detailed.
