To evaluate the antimicrobial activity the diffusion test in agar was carried through, with 15 different microorganisms, using discs impregnated with aqueous dispersions of the vegetal extracts. For those extracts that had presented inhibitory activity, the calculation of Minimum Inhibitory Concentration was carried out (CIM). The results had shown that the extracts of X. violaceum and S. cuminii had inhibited 8 and 6 bacteria, respectively. What leads to the conclusion that the extracts of X. violaceum and S. cuminii are capable to inhibit the microbial growth.
Unitermos: Malpighiaceae, Byrsonima, atividade antimicrobiana.ABSTRACT: Byrsonima species, family Malpighiaceae, is popularly known as "murici". There are several properties attributed to the leaves of Byrsonima species including febrifuge, to treat gastrointestinal dysfunctions and skin diseases. In this work, the antimicrobial activity of Byrsonima fagifolia, B. basiloba and B. intermedia extracts obtained from the leaves were evaluated by using the disc-diffusion method. The results obtained showed that the methanol extracts of leaves had presented antimicrobial activity against all the microorganisms tested.
Unitermos: Operculina macrocarpa; Convolvulaceae; in vivo; motilidade intestinal. ABSTRACT: Evaluation of the laxative activity of Operculina macrocarpa L. Urban (Convolvulaceae). The aim of this work was to evaluate the effects on mice intestinal motility after oral administration of Operculina macrocarpa L. Urban, known as "batata-depurga" or "jalapa", a northeast Brazilian medicinal plant used as a laxative. An hydroalcoholic decoction and dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, n-buthanol and residual fractions, as well as the powder preparation of "batata de purga" -as it is traditionally used -were evaluated. The results showed that dichloromethane, ethyl acetate and residual fractions, and the powder preparation showed a significant increase of the intestinal motility, in our experimental conditions.
Davilla elliptica St. Hill ("lixinha"), family Dilleniaceae, is commonly used in the Brazilian folk medicine as purgative and stimulant. This work evaluated the antimicrobial activity of the methanol and chloroform extracts of the leaves and barks of D. elliptica using the discdiffusion method. The results obtained showed that the methanolic extracts of the leaves and barks presented antimicrobial activity against the tested microorganisms.
