This communication presents an analysis of the propagation of an electromagnetic wave in a medium in which the variation of dielectric constant is of the form ϵ = ϵ(0) - ϵ(2)(Z)r2. Explicit expressions for the intensity at any point have been obtained for ϵ(2)(Z) = constant, and numerical calculations have been presented for the case when ϵ(2)(Z) = ϵ20(1+αZ)−2 and compared with the results obtained earlier, using the geometrical optics approximation. These two forms for the variation of ϵ(2)(Z) with Z correspond to the cylindrical and conical SELFOC fibres and rods.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
