A trifunctional, partially fluorinated anthracene-substituted triptycene monomer was spread at an air/water interface into a monolayer, which was transformed into a long-range-ordered 2D polymer by irradiation with a standard UV lamp. The polymer was analyzed by Brewster angle microscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy measurements, and non-contact atomic force microscopy, which confirmed the generation of a network structure with lattice parameters that are virtually identical to a structural model network based on X-ray diffractometry of a closely related 2D polymer. The nc-AFM images highlight the long-range order over areas of at least 300×300 nm . As required for a 2D polymer, the pore sizes are monodisperse, except for the regions where the network is somewhat stretched because it spans over protrusions. Together with a previous report on the nature of the cross-links in this network, the structural information provided herein leaves no doubt that a 2D polymer has been synthesized under ambient conditions at an air/water interface.
A new ''inverted'' topological configuration is demonstrated both experimentally and theoretically for self-assembled dendron and dendrimer-based supramolecular liquid crystals in which the dendrons/ dendrimers occupy the continuous domain and the ionically attached pendant chains are confined in discrete domains. All previous studies on dendrimer and dendron-based liquid crystals have reported ''normal'' liquid crystalline configurations in which the dendritic templates occupy discrete domains (in spherical or columnar phases) or continuous struts (in bicontinuous cubic phases), while the pendant chains occupy the continuous space-filling domain. These surprising results mandate a re-examination of the packing mechanisms for this important class of materials and open new routes to unique nanostructures of possible use in existing and emerging technologies.Supramolecular self-assembly of polymers offers nearly limitless possibilities when the architecture of the macromolecular template, the nature of the supramolecular interactions and the diversity of the ligands (tectons) attached to the polymer backbone are fully exploited.
Absorption cross sections of the rare gases Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe have been calculated by the quantum defect method. From them absorption coefficients for bound-free transitions in thermal plasmas of 8,000 to 16,000 ~ have been derived. The wavelength range considered extends from 2,000 to 7,000 A. The results are compared with those of other authors and with new experimental data. They agree satisfactorily.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
