The purpose of this paper, within the altruistic, intrinsic, or extrinsic motives framework, was to report the qualitative findings on the undocumented motives of English as a foreign language (EFL) female student teachers to become a teacher by choosing a teacher education program at one public university in Jambi, Sumatra, Indonesia. The data were collected through demographic profiles and semi-structured in-depth interviews with 21 EFL female student teachers. Whereas personal interests and aptitudes undoubtedly act an important role to embark on a journey to become a teacher, our findings indicated that the female student teachers’ desire to enter a teacher education program was driven by a strong mixing of altruistic motives (idealistic and social mission such as helping society become better in future, helping rural and remote areas, shaping future educated generation, and loving to work with young generation), intrinsic motives (intellectual mission, role models’ continuation, and personal fulfillment), and extrinsic motives (compatible work schedules and a hero status at school and in society). Implications and suggestions for future research are also discussed.
Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak has the potential to affect the mental health of medical personnel. This study aimed to investigate the anxiety experienced by medical personnel during the COVID-19 outbreak and its correlation with individual work performance. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 501 Medical Personnel in Indonesia. Anxiety level and work performance were assessed by the GAD-7 and IWP-1.0. Data analysis techniques used were descriptive statistics, Man-Whitney test, Kruskal-Wallis test, and Spearman's Rank-Order Correlation. The results showed that 33.33% of the participants did not experience anxiety, followed by moderate, mild, and severe levels (31.14%, 27.74%, and 7.78%). Furthermore, the level of anxiety was different in terms of sex, age, and type of medical personnel, while there was no difference in the length of time of work. The results of the correlation analysis showed that anxiety was correlated with task performance and contextual performance, but there was no correlation with the counter-productive work behavior. There is a crucial need for psychological assistance to medical personnel in orders to reduce their anxiety as well as improve their performance.
In addition to facilitating understanding the material that is difficult to understand, animation media can also improve student learning outcomes. The application of animation media in the research conducted aims to improve the learning outcomes of class VIII B students of 19 Kerinci State Middle School. The research method uses classroom action research with two actions in the cycle. The technique of collecting data through observation and test sheets. The results of the study indicate an increase in aspects and actions. Aspects in the first action of students' interest in learning, namely 48.38%, experienced an increase in the second action reaching an average of 80.31%. Then in the third action it increased to an average of 92.53%. This happens because the application of animation media is far more effective in attracting the attention and concentration of students in learning. If the learning interest of students is high and very enthusiastic in learning, learning will also be easy to understand, learning outcomes will be better, and learning goals can be achieved as desired.
This study investigated the effect of contextual teaching and learning approach on students’ reading comprehension achievement. The quasi experimental design was employed in this study involving experimental and control groups. The experimental class received the contextual teaching and learning approach while the control class received the conventional approach. A multiple choice test was used as the research instrument to look at students’ reading comprehension. Data were analyzed through using the parametric levene statistic and non parametric tests. The result revealed that the experimental and control classes had significantly different reading comprehension achievement. It was proved by the mean score of reading comprehension achievement and mean score of gain of the experimental class was higher than the control class. This study also provided information for the researchers and lecturers about how to implement contextual teaching and learning in teaching reading.
