Fifty-two patients with an occipital encephalocele were managed at our institution between 1971-1990 inclusive. The case notes of fifty-one patients were available for review. Thirty-four of the patients presented in the first decade of the study. Fifty-seven per cent (29) developed hydrocephalus and 18 of these required shunting. The overall one year mortality was 23% (12) but only one patient died within the last decade. Of 23 patients followed up by postal questionnaire to general practitioners; 14 had no obvious deficit and 9 had a combination of deficits. Only one death occurred after one year of life in a child with a very severe handicap.
An analytical method for the determination of 1251 and lZsI in environmental samples is described. Samples are treated to convert all iodine to a common oxidation state prior to chemical separation and purification. The iodine is reduced to I,; then the elemental iodine is extracted into CC14, back extracted into water and precipitated as PdI,. The chemical recovery is determined gravimetrically. The PdI, precipitate is counted on an intrinsicgermanium detector, and the intensities of the K, X-rays from l%I and 12gI are measured.A matrix solution is used to correct for the interference of one spectral region to the other. If 1311 is present, as indicated by an independent measurement, a correction for l3lI interference is also made.

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
