Originally designed as a way to reflect past performance, chess ratings are now widely used to reflect players strength with many important aspects in tournament scheduling, advertising and premium shares. The ELO system has been officially adopted by World Chess Federation (FIDE). We used Bayesian analysis of actual data from elite chess players to fit parametric statistical models that could subsidize proposals for rating system improvement. Although most of the considered options are not new, since based on well known preference models, the use of a weighed likelihood function to emulate dynamic rating systems via Bayesian inference is novel. We compared descriptive ability using marginal likelihood based information criteria. Akaike information criterion was used to compare predictions. Many of the considered options improve on Elo ratings and there is strong evidence that dynamic models considering both white advantage and propensity to draws would result in more accurate systems.
The study of the concentration dynamics of a pollutant substance in a fluid is a classic problem of fluid mechanics given by the transport equation $u_{t}+cu_{x}=0$, where $u=u(x,t)$ denotes the pollutant concentration along a horizontal pipe of a fixed cross-section in the positive $x$ direction at he time $t0$ and $c$ represents the fluid propagation velocity. In view of that, the velocity of propagation of the fluid is a physical quantity, obtained, generally in an approximate form, which makes such quantity uncertain. In this paper, we propose to obtain the concentration when the constant $c$ represents the fuzzy set. The concentration was obtained by using the Zadeh's Extension Principle. Through the concentration obtained, we analyze the influence of uncertainty on the fluid propagation velocity in the concentration dynamics and explore possible practial applications in case-studies of engineering, environmental and soil sciences.
Eucalyptus is the most valuable cultivated forest genus in Brazil nowadays. Modeling eucalypts volume has been important for foresters in recent years due to strong site and genetic variations, management regimes and multiple products generated from these plantations. At this work, fuzzy and neuro-fuzzy models were developed to represent the volume pattern of eucalypts clonal stands from Brazilian coast region. Likewise in other scientific field, these types of modeling methodologies showed to be precise and accurate.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
