To examine several variables related to stranger anxiety in infancy and to control for the effects of idiosyncratic features of single strangers, the authors presented a total of 12 strangers, adults and children of both sexes, to ninety-six 8-and 12-month infants of both sexes. The results indicated that (a) 8-month infants respond positively toward strangers, but this positive response decreases from 8 to 12 months; (b) infants respond more positively to child than to adult strangers; (c) 12-month males respond more positively to female than to male strangers.
