This study examined teachers' utilization of instructional materials for effective teaching of business studies in junior secondary schools in Delta State. The study was guide by three research questions. The study employed the descriptive survey research design. Population for the study consisted of 665 business studies teachers in the 448 public junior secondary schools in Delta State. The proportionate stratified random sampling technique was used to select a sample size of 50% of 333 out from 665 business studies teachers from 224 public junior secondary schools in Delta State. A questionnaire titled: Teachers' Utilization of Instructional Materials for Teaching Business Studies Questionnaire (TUIMTBSQ), containing 38 items was used in conducting the study. Both the validity and reliability of the research instrument were established. Data were analyzed using mean score at 2.50 rating and standard deviation. Findings of the study revealed among others that business studies teachers' utilization of instructional materials such as printed and non-printed materials for effective teaching of the subject in junior secondary schools in Delta State was to a low extent, which was minimal. The study recommended among others that: State Government and State Education Board should support teachers' utilization of printed and non-printed instructional materials in business studies through adequate funding and procurement of materials needed in teaching business studies in the junior secondary schools in Delta State. Principals should also improvise the required printed and non-printed instructional materials for business studies teachers in the school. This must be accorded with constant supervision and continuous staff training and retraining programmes that will improve teachers' utilization of printed and non-printed technological devices that will aid effective teaching in the classroom.
Competency is one of the essential elements in teaching. It also determines the effectiveness of teachers during the teaching and learning process and performance of students. The study therefore investigated the competency needs of business educators in Osun State with a view to know those competencies that are needed but not possessed. Descriptive research design of survey type was adopted for the study. The population was 613 business educators out of which 300 was sampled using simple and stratified random sampling techniques. A self-design 20-item questionnaire titled “Teachers’ Competency Assessment Questionnaire (TCAQ)” was used to collect data for the study. The instrument was constructed on 4-point scale. The instrument was validated by two experts. The reliability of the instrument was established using Cronbach alpha and this yielded reliability co-efficient of 0.78. The research questions raised were answered using the means scores. Any item with a mean score greater than or equal to 2.50 suggests moderate possession, item with mean score ranging from 1.50 to 2.49 suggests fairly possession while item with mean score of 1.49 or below suggests not possession. Findings of the study revealed that out four competencies assessed, two were moderately possessed (planning of instruction and classroom instruction skills) one was fairly possessed (practical demonstration skills) while the remaining one was not possessed (ICT skills). It was recommended among others that government and relevant agencies need to organize series of training for business educators to acquire the needed skills.
Unemployment has become a household name among graduates in Nigeria. It is more worrisome when business education graduates are conspicuously found among the unemployed graduates roaming around the streets. This study therefore evaluated the extent of possession of communication, financial management and failure management skills for self-reliance among business education undergraduate students in south-western states. The survey research design was adopted. The population of the study consisted of 630 final year Business Education students in all the four public universities offering Business Education programme. The sample of the study consisted of 150 respondents, representing 24%, which was selected through proportionate sampling technique. A self-designed questionnaire titled “Questionnaire on Evaluating Entrepreneurial Skills for Self-Reliance “(QEESSR) with 35 items was developed to elicit responses on the three research questions raised for the study. The instrument was validated by two Business Education experts and one Test expert. The split half method was used to determine the reliability of the instrument and the data collected were subjected to Pearson Product Moment Correlation formula and yielded a coefficient of 0.72. The study concludes that Business Education students highly possessed communication, financial management and failure management skills that could make them become successful entrepreneurs. The study therefore recommends that Business Education students should make judicious use of the failure management skills possessed to establish their own entrepreneurial outfits and nurture them to maturity after graduation, among others.
