The Northern Long-nosed Potoroo Potorous tridactylus tridactylus is progressively disappearing from habitat remnants on the far north coast of New South Wales and is in danger of becoming extinct on the northern coastal plain. In this review we show how the speed and scale of coastal development continues to adversely affect the four remaining areas of habitat where the species has been recorded since 2000. As an ecological specialist, the potoroo may be inherently susceptible to decline in a rapidly changing environment and persistence of the species in the coastal zone is now dependent on the success of conservation management practices in four small 'anthropogenic' refugia.
