Bamboo shoot forms a traditional delicacy in many countries. Being low in fat content and high in potassium, carbohydrate, dietary fibres, Vitamins and active materials, bamboo shoots are consumed in raw, canned, boiled, marinated, fermented, frozen, liquid and medicinal forms. Although the fresh bamboo shoots of species like Dendraocalamus giganteus are healthier and nutritionally rich, the young shoots, after fortification, can be consumed by processing into a wide range of food products with longer shelf-life and better organoleptic qualities. However, the consumption pattern of bamboo shoots in most of the countries is traditional, non-standardized, seasonal and region-specific with little value addition. Therefore, there exists a great opportunity, especially for the organized food processing sectors to take up the processing of bamboo shoot-based food products in an organized manner. The present article gives an insight into the global scenario of bamboo shoot-based food products and their consumption pattern, the quality attributes, and the opportunities for value addition along with future prospects in view of international food safety, security and nutrition.
Silver diamine fluoride combines the remineralizing effects of fluoride and the antibacterial effects of silver and thus provides an alternative care path for those patients in whom traditional restorative treatment cannot be done. Many countries have recommended the use of 38% SDF for caries prevention as well as for caries arrest. SDF is proved to be more efficient as caries preventive tool when compared to fluoride varnishes and APF Gel. Other dental benefits of SDF continue to be researched and discussed in the literature. However, SDF- related black staining is of prime concern while using it in aesthetic zone. No serious adverse effects of using SDF have been reported in dentistry. SDF is safe, effective, and cost-friendly agent. We can hope that it can meet both the AAPD and ISPPD vision and mission to advance optimal oral health for all children through prevention, involvement of the society and other necessary measures.
Aim: Purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of 3 different types of retainers (Hawley removable, Essix removable and Fixed) of the mandibular and maxillary anterior sextant and to assess patient perception of crowding. Methodology: A retrospective study of 80 patients was carried out for a time period of 1-2 years into retention. E models (digital models) were assessed pre- and post-orthodontically using Little’s Irregularity Index. The amount of Irregularity was compared for 3 retention groups (Hawley, Essix and Fixed). Relapse was also subjectively measured. Results: Increase in the Irregularity Index of the mandibular incisors was observed after wearing Hawley retainers, including crowding which was significantly more than patients with Fixed retainers. Conclusion: Hawley retainers allow for more mandibular incisor movement rather than the Fixed retainers.
