SynopsisThe integration of computer support into information processing provides many services for workers in science and technology. These services result from the simultaneous generation of printed text and machine records in the processing of data for publication, in effect, producing a complete information system rather than simply a publications system. Polymer Science & Technology (POST), a new service of the American Chemical Society's Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS), exemplifies such a multifaceted, computer-based information system. POST consists of two units: POST-J covers the journal and report literature, and POST-P covers patents. Each unit is available in both computer language and printed journal form. This new system serves the needs of the practicing scientist for current, deeply indexed, subject-oriented, printed information which has been specially formatted to simplify scanning and searching. The computer tape version of POST is supplied along with well-documented search programs for use in the subscriber's computer installations or, if the subscriber wishes, computer searching can be done at CAS. This paper describes the POST information system in relation to the total CAS operation.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
