Methodology is one of the important elements to implement he objective of education in teaching learning process particularly in English classes. To give the information about two phenomenal methods namely GTM and CLT is the main purpose of this scientific writing since GTM is commonly used previously and CLT is very famous nowadays. In so doing, the strength of this paper is to improve the knowledge of educational practitioners especially in method of teaching English. The comparison between the two methods is elaborated clearly in terms of the principles. The principles are characteristic of teaching learning process, nature of instruction, handling the students' feelings and emotions, the role of native language of students, the language skills that are emphasized, and the way of teacher's response to students' errors. The more beneficial method nowadays is CLT but GTM also still has some positive things offer.
Students' achievement in writing descriptive text is very low, in this study Think Pair Share (TPS) is applied to solve the problem. Action research is conducted for the result. Additionally, qualitative and quantitative techniques are applied in this research. The subject of this research is grade VIII in Junior High School in Indonesia. From this study, the mean of the first evaluation sharply increased to the mean of the second evaluation and to the mean of the third evaluation. They are 66.4375, 78.125 and 87.5625 respectively. Observation result showed that the students gave their good attitudes and responses during teaching and learning process by applying the application of TPS (Think Pair Share) technique. Questionnaire and interview report showed that students agree with the application of TPS (Think Pair Share) technique have helped them in writing descriptive text. It can be conclude that the students' achievement is improved when they are taught by TPS Technique.
Methods of teaching reading skill are not the same in different countries. It depends on the condition and situation of the learners. Observing the method of teaching in Malaysia was the purpose of this study and the result of the study shows that there are 5 methods that are applied in classroom activities namely Grammar Translation Method (GTM), Direct Method (DM), Communicative Language Teaching (CLT), Audio Lingual Method (ALM) and Silent Way (SW). Through these methods, the students and the teacher can reach the purpose of teaching reading. From this study, it can be concluded that combining more than one method is one of the better ways for the teaching reading skill to EFL learners.
The purpose of tis study was to investigate English as Foreign Language (EFL) students’ achievement in writing skill (descriptive text) through Think Pair Share method. Therefore, the action research design was implemented to match with the purpose of the study. The techniques of collecting the data were writing test, observation, questionnaire, and interview. The result of the study shows that the students’ achievement sustainably improved from the first evaluation, which was 66,4375 to second evaluation, which was 78,125 and to the third evaluation, which was 87,5625. The score continuously improved from the first evaluation to the third evaluation. Observation result shows that the students gave their good attitudes and responses during teaching and learning process by applying the application of TPS (Think Pair Share) method. Questionnaire and interview report shows that students agreed that the application of TPS (Think Pair Share) method had helped them in writing descriptive text. In conclusion, the application of TPS method significantly improved students’ achievement in writing descriptive text.
