EFFECTS OF NON-STEROIDAL ANTI-INFLAMMATORY DRUGS DURING PREGNANCY AND BREAST-FEEDING IN WISTAR RATSABSTRACT: Fetal alterations, weight and length of offspring were assessed after two types of NSAIDs were induced in Wistar rats, during pregnancy and breast-feeding. Twenty-four animals, comprising three groups with 8 animals each, were employed to compare NSAIDs results. Animals received NSAIDs via gavage every 24 hours during pregnancy and breast-feeding, followed by offspring´s anthropometry. Mean weight and length at birth revealed significant difference between mean weight and length (p<0.001). Only control group with meloxicam was compared at weaning since all diclofenac offspring had died. Mean weight and length were greater in control than in meloxicam one. Results show that diclofenac sodium is the NSAID that most causes anthropomorphic and morphological changes when compared to meloxicam and control groups.KEY WORDS: Anti-inflammatory drugs; Pregnancy; Breast-feeding.
