Vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) may lead to prolonged hospitalization stay and increase the risk of infections especially in immunosuppressed patients. Rectal swab screening and contact isolation are advised to prevent the spread of VRE colonisation and infection among patients. Colonisation screening policy is carried out according to the guidelines applied by the hospital infection committees.
