The research literamre on the effects of discontinuation of drug treatment is reviewed. The implications and problems generated by the increasing body of evidence that the therapeutic effects of ataractic drugs do not transfer to the nondrug stare are considered. Effort is also made to elucidate some of the problems which negar~ve effects of drug withdrawal create for drug therapy. Directions are suggested for further research that should lead to increased understanding and knowledge in chis area.There is considerable support from the clinical research literature that the therapeutic effects of acaraccic drugs are not maintained following drug withdrawal (
