This study was intended to depict how Critical Literacy Pedagogy (CLP) principles were incorporated in EFL reading class in Indonesian secondary school and the students' Critical Thinking (CT) were fostered during learning process. This study was a classroom practice-based model of how the principles were transferred into the detailed teaching syntax in an Islamic senior high school in West Java Indonesia. As a case study elaborating how a phenomenon happened, this study explored teaching steps, teacher-students dialogues, questions and the way the questions posed reflecting students' CT skills, and students' engagement in the learning process. The use of Indonesian folklores containing controversy predicted to enable students develop their thinking skills became novelty of the study. In addition, three times interventions were designed in which each intervention consisted of (a) teaching critical thinking concept explicitly and implicitly, (b) seven steps of teaching reading procedure incorporating CLP principles (explaining author's purpose, activating students' prior knowledge, reading text loudly, discussing text in group, exploring the text in class activities in which Critical Literacy Questions and CT Questions are incorporated, answering comprehension questions in group, and reflection, and (c) CT skills discussion. This study provides an alternative model of teaching CT in Indonesia context.
Mirqat al-Mahabbah is a monumental work of a great scholar, KH. Aon Abdul Majid who was well-known as Ajengan Aon from Singaparna-Tasikmalaya and lived during the Indonesian independence struggle (1890-1934). This book is presented in Arabic language, laden with the beauty of the sentences. Using Ilmu Badi', the beauty of a sentence can be derived either from the "words" which is called al-Muhassinat al-Lafzhiyyah, and/ or the beauty that derived from the "meaning" known as al-Muhassinat al-Maknawiyah. Among the types of beauty referencing the words are jinas, iqtibas and saja'. This study focuses on discussing the beauty of the phrases/ sentences in Mirqat al-Mahabbah only from jinas. The results indicate the varieties of jinas diverse in the book, thus symbolizing the aesthetic of such literary work.
This paper presents the result of a study related to the translation shifts procedure in the translation of Indonesian into English texts of the diorama display at the History Museum in National Monument Jakarta. The 51 (fifty one) pair of texts available in the displays are used as the main data. The data were collected by using documentation, and by taking pictures of the entire texts in the label of the dioramas. Using the Catford's theory of translations shift, the four types of category shifts revealed in the texts are structure shifts, class shifts, unit shifts, and intra-system shifts. Meanwhile, the data presenting level shift was found unavailable in the texts.
Attitude have to do with evaluating things, people’s characters, and their feelings. Attitude can be identified not only from the dialogues used by people in their daily life interaction, but also from the characters’ dialogues in a movie. This research takes attitude and its language functions in Aladdin as the main character in Aladdin 2019 movie. This research focuses on; 1) What attitudes are revealed from Aladdin, the main character in Aladdin 2019 movie? 2) What language functions of Aladdin’s attitude in Aladdin 2019 movie? This research use qualitative method. There are two types of data, they are audio visual and document; Aladdin 2019 movie and its movie script. Technique of collecting data in this research use the audio visual documentation study technique and the researcher conducted mixed stages from some of the theories of analyzing data. To analyze data, researcher uses Appraisal System theory by J.R Martin, David Rose, and P.R.R White. The result of this research shows; 1) Aladdin as the main character in Aladdin 2019 movie revealed three types of attitudes; affect, judgment, and appreciation with 2) Aladdin’s attitude revealed five language functions from seven language functions by M.A.K Halliday; representational function, interactional function, personal function, heuristic function and regulatory function. Though, all types of attitude revealed in the movie, yet the most salient attitude Aladdin shown is positive appreciation, and the language used in his expressions has representational function.Keywords: Appraisal System, Attitude, Affect, Judgment, Appreciation, Aladdin.
Of Mice and Men is a novel written by John Steinbeck, published in 1937. It tells about the story of George Milton and Lenny Small, two displaced migrant ranch workers, who move from place to lace in California in searching of a new job opportunities during the Great Depression in the United States. The novel is translated to Indonesian by Pramoedya Ananta Toer in “Tikus dan Manusia. So, it seems fun to analyse how the translator transfer meaning from source language to target language, especially in translating swearword which is found in the novel. The researcher used Hudges’s (1991) theory about swearword and Molina and Albir (2005), and Fawcet(1997) about translation techniques used by the translator. From the analysis, the researcher found 9 data of imbecile term for nuts, cuckoo, and ain’t bright, 23 data general terms for bastard and crazy, 39 data of death terms for the hell and goddamn, 6 data of mother in law terms for son of bitch, 1 data of racist for Nigger, 3 data of animal terms of rats, chicken, and cat, and 6 data of sexual irregulities for tart and bitch. It is also, 5 kinds of swearword translation techniques in the research, they are 9 data of literal translation, 1 data of particularization, 1 data of reduction, 3 data of transposition and 1 data of adaptation
