The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of discourse analysis method on speaking skill. Moreover, it is aimed to develop higher order thinking skills by using discourse analysis method to improve speaking skills. In the study, qualitative and quantitative research and analysis methods were used together due to the simultaneous mixed design. The study group of this research consists of sixth grade students. Open-ended questions for texts, evaluation form, opinion form and questionnaire developed were used as data collection instruments. In data analysis, ttest, correlation and content analysis were used. The data gathered through observation forms were graded by using Likert scale and presented in graphs. Significant differences were found in the t-test results at the level of p, 000 and in correlation analysis, correlation was found between the texts through which speaking skills were assessed and evaluated. It was also reflected on the observation forms that student performance showed an increasing course after each study. In the process, 8 texts were used as material for a total of 23 lessons during 7 weeks. As a result, it was found that discourse analysis method develops speaking skills in parallel with the comprehension skills and the method has a positive effect on both cognitive and affective development. These findings were observed in students' speaking activities, in their answers to questions about the texts, questionnaires and interview forms. As the texts were examined by using discourse analysis method, gradual development and progress in analysis and speaking skills have been observed in students.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
