Young climate activist Greta Thunberg was Time magazine’s Person of the Year for 2019. In this study, the authors examine the role of social media in Thunberg’s rise to prominence by investigating Twitter communications over 14 months, analyzing tweet contents and user profiles. The changes in sentiment revealed on Twitter are examined, along with four major events from the period. The paper also compares Swedish and American user characteristics in relation to Thunberg. The findings reveal that celebrities and public figures played an essential role in amplifying the influence of the activist. To categorize the influencer group, the authors identified each user’s occupation, organization, location and position on other social issues. The results show that some people held a negative attitude toward Thunberg, not only because of their skepticism about climate change but also because of their views on other social issues, such as gender and age.
Due to the rapid diffusion of social mobile payment (SMP), the current research explores the post-adoption behavior of SMP users. It proposes a research model to determine the core predictors of users’ continuance intentions to use SMPs. Through the analysis of survey data from South Korea, it indicates that satisfaction strongly and positively affects users’ continuance intentions. Moreover, satisfaction is influenced by perceived usefulness (PU), security, and enjoyment. Interestingly, although perceived ease of use (PEU) does not directly affect satisfaction, it can indirectly influence satisfaction via users’ PU and perceived enjoyment. Furthermore, perceived ubiquity has strong effects on users’ PU and PEU. The study also discusses meaningful implications, and provides suggestions for future studies.
With the outbreak of COVID-19, the video game console market is thriving again. In this study, we attempted to explore users’ intention to use video game consoles by developing a causal model mainly based on coolness theory and the technology acceptance model. To better illustrate user experience for video game consoles, we added several concepts to the causal model, including hedonic motivation, system and service quality, perceived cost, and game variety. Through examining survey-based data from 360 Koreans, we discovered that the model had a high explanatory power for users’ intention to use video game consoles. The key findings were as follows: First, among the components of coolness theory, individuals’ attitude toward consoles was significantly related to subcultural appeal and originality, but not to attractiveness. Second, originality positively influenced subcultural appeal significantly. Overall, this study implied that the novel coolness theory is effective for exploring user experience regarding of specific devices and services.
Media plays an important role in the acquisition of health information worldwide. This was particularly evident in the face of the COVID-19 epidemic. Relatedly, it is practical and desirable for people to wear masks for health, fashion, and religious regions. However, depending on cultural differences, people naturally accept wearing a mask, or they look upon it negatively. In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic led to widespread mask-wearing mandates worldwide. In the case of COVID-19, wearing a mask is strongly recommended, so by analyzing the news data before and after the spread of the epidemic, it is possible to see how the direction of crisis management is being structured. In particular, by utilizing big data analysis of international news data, discourses around the world can be analyzed more deeply. This study collected and analyzed 58,061 international news items related to mask-wearing from 1 January 2019 to 31 December 2020. The collected dataset was compared before and after the World Health Organization’s pandemic declaration by applying structural topic model analysis. The results revealed that prior to the declaration, issues related to the COVID-19 outbreak were emphasized, but afterward, issues related to movement restrictions, quarantine management, and local economic impacts emerged.
Background: The most important sequela of endobronchial tuberculosis (EBTB) is bronchial stenosis, which causes wheezing, dyspnea and obstructive pneumonia. But there have been no reports about applying cryotherapy for granular EBTB that did not show luminal narrowing of the bronchus at diagnosis. Whether this technique is useful for preventing granular EBTB from progressing into stenosis needs to be clarified. Objective: To investigate the efficacy and safety of bronchoscopic cryotherapy for granular endobronchial tuberculosis. Methods: In this study, we analyzed the records of 76 patients with granular EBTB. Diagnosis of TB was confirmed by microbiology or histopathology. Bronchoscopic examinations revealed that the patients had granular endobronchial tuberculosis. Thirty-eight patients received bronchoscopic cryotherapy plus routine anti-tuberculosis chemotherapy and the other 38 patients received routine anti-tuberculosis chemotherapy alone. We compared the treatment effect of these 2 groups. The outcome measures were the changes of lesions, the rate of disappearance of lesions and complications of bronchoscopic cryotherapy. Results: The complete removal rate was 100% in patients with bronchoscopic cryotherapy plus routine anti-tuberculosis chemotherapy; the complete removal rate was 78.9% in patients with anti-tuberculosis chemotherapy alone; the rate of disappearance of lesions in the bronchoscopic cryotherapy plus routine anti-tuberculosis chemotherapy group was faster than that of the anti-tuberculosis chemotherapy alone group. There were no severe complications from bronchoscopic cryotherapy. Conclusions: Bronchoscopic cryotherapy can accelerate the healing of granular EBTB and help to prevent progressive bronchial stenosis due to granular EBTB and is a very safe method.
