The term 'mimesis of memory' refers to both the mimetie and thc poetie quality of literature in that it considers thc ways in whieh proeesses of individual remembering ean be staged in works of fietion. Being more than mere reproduetions of reality, narrative texts ean imitate, thematize and problematize the ways in whieh human memory works. In this essay, we want to examine different aspeets of literary stagings of memory in dose eonneetion to eategories provided by dassieal and post-dassieal narratology, namely thc representation of time, the semantization of plaee, narrative mediation, aspeets of foealization and the problem of urueliable narration. Although most fietional works feature at least some of the narrative deviees we identify in the artide, we will show how eertain eombinations and specifie forms ereate a partieularly 'memory-like' effeet.
